How does a hidden rivet work?

I know this is a little dorky, but I never understood how a hidden rivet would stay in place. How can a piece of metal stay put while being covered by a piece of fabric? Can anyone shed some light into this process?

A rivet is basically two pieces of metal... um... riveted together, to keep pocket edges from coming apart, in this case. A "hidden" rivet is just covered by a "flap" of denim sewn over the top of the rivet to keep it from scratching things.

depends on the weight/quality of the rivet. I've had chunkier rivets on jeans (that i was prone to play with when bored) that did eventually fall off...most recent one that comes to mind was on a pair of evisuxoki-ni denim...

and i thought oki-ni was cool (they still are, right?)

rivets are rivets and rivets are locked tight together. it's not like the empire state falls apart with wear...okay bad example, but yeah.

I think the hidden rivet is a concept american denim manufactures need to grasp. I mean levis started it, and Japan continues it, but a lot of the western (European and American) denim brands have forgot about them.

Does a hidden rivet really add that much more protection from tearing than a bartack, or are just most companies too cheap to use them?

the original purpose of hidden rivets was not strength but it was to protect saddles, chairs, and other surfaces from being scratched by the rivet.

before hidden rivets jeans used exposed rivets.

after enough complaints from the public about rivets scratching shit up they covered the rivet.

as sewing technology improved bartacks (which are generally more than strong enough) eventually replaced rivets altogether.

I had back pockets come off that were bar tacked, but never a back pocket that was riveted.

Rivets can come off, though, as happened a pair of 1947 501xx the same day I had bought them.

When rivets come off, it is mostly because the length of the nail that goes through the fabric is not adjusted to the thickness of the fabric and the number of layers. Many layers and thick denim = longer nail.

Also: cheap rivets = metal too soft.
