How much SHOULD it cost to have my kinetic Omega Speedmaster repaired?

My wife brought it in some years ago and she was quoted at over $500.00. It's been sitting around now for over four years. I hope to bring it with me when I head to A'stan.

hard to say what it should cost without knowing what's wrong with it.

My wife just brought it to a mall repair shop - no specialist.

I'm no watch expert, so I'll try and articulate the problem as best I can: As stated in my last post, it's a kinetic (automatic?) watch so it winds itself. It stopped one time before for a long period of time then I decided to try it on again and it miraculously started to work. It worked for a LONG time (couple of years?) and then...dead. When I try to shake it alive, all I hear is moving parts (kind of like a winding sound).

The watch was new when purchased in '98 and it died for the first time in early 2000's. It died again around 2005'ish.

I've since deployed to Iraq two times and was forced to bring my G-shock watches with me. I'd love for this Omega to have some combat time in Afghanistan - now that's the ticket.

like I said I think you need to replace the capacitor

theres no capacitor. That watch is straight mechanical unlike seiko kinetics. It sounds like maybe some how the watch is not winding. when you wear it does it keep time? when you set it down for lets say 2-3 hours it stops?

wouldn't it just be a automatic then? I figure if they call it a kinetic/autoquartz there would be a capacitor or rechargeable battery

Y'all just need to clear it up with this dude. If it's kinetic, it's got a capacitor. If it's automatic...then it's just a damn automatic. If the dude doesn't know I'd guess the watch indicates it on the face or paperwork somewhere. Pretty tough to give any sort of advice without knowing whether it's kinetic or auto.

Thanks Everyone!! I'll have to pull it out of the misc box it's sitting in and provide more clarification. Already, I know I'm dealing with folks who know about this stuff, which makes me feel good!!

Hopefully, I can clear things up so I can get a better assessment of my issue.

Cheers - and thanks once again!!

Shortly after it died the second time, I would wear it every now and then (it's such a great watch) and the time would advance a few minutes, at the most, telling me that there is some winding going on. The noise that it makes; however, sounds like a winding noise without any true winding going on (if that even makes sense).

I was just searching Google to try and find my watch (I'm at work) and becuase it's been so long since I've looked at it, i think this is close to it makeing me think it's an "Automatic." Although, I think the seconds hand has an airplane on the the end.

hmm. is the watch a speedmaster? its either an automatic or a manual wind watch. as far as i know the professionals are usually manual wind and they never came with a quartz movement. hope that helps. speedmasters are beautiful watches

that is correct i misread that it was a Seamaster when it was a Speedmaster he was talking about.

Not sure there is a kinetic Speedmaster but there's definitely a kinetic Seamaster

Okay - here's my watch. I found the box tucked away in the garage and it is, in fact, a Speedmaster Automatic.

With this definitive knowledge, I think WhoGotMeIntoThis said it doesn't need a capacitor. Should it still cast $800? I said $500+ last time, but my wife confirmed that the quote was $800.

Edit: When I shake it, it sounds like a mechanical pendulum swinging back and forth then fades into nothing.

ajchen-

I will start off by saying I don't shit about watches but I saw this one on your blog and it looks fucking great.

Can you give me a little more background on this brand? That is about the price point I have been looking for in a nice watch. Quality investment?

I love natos more than anybody, but I don't think they look right on gshocks.

I have that same watch though and surprisingly it gets worn more than most of my others. I do wish I had gotten the solar atomic version though. :/

same here don't know why but I think G's with natos don;t look right.

I'm not a fan of square G's but the GW-5000B is mighty tempting

what are these problems?

power reserve, not being in COSC standard, and this one member had his off by 15mins...a lot of them have been sent back to the AD and was given a new watch, and quite a few have been sent for service.

i kept going back and forth on the solar atomic but decided to hold off on it for now.

i plan on using it when i go to the beach etc. just much rather have a nato than the regular strap when im there..also heading to hawaii later this year to finally try scuba diving and the shock would be the one i would want on me..unless i get another seiko or that alpha milsub. hehe..:o
