Chrono Trigger was awesome, probably the most fun battle system ever.

Yeah, current gen hasn't been too good recently. NIS America has two games coming out this year that are worth looking into. Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel and Hyperdimension Neptunia. The latter being the one I'm looking forward to the most. It looks soo ridiculous. In a good way. So Japanese and over the top its amazing. I'm sure you'd be into it Gatefold since it is almost on the verge of being softcore hentai and I know you're into tentacle porn n' shit.

Description and Trailer:

Now here’s a creative premise: Hyperdimension Neptunia is a role-playing game loosely based on the video game industry, starring characters who are thinly veiled pastiches of the current crop of video game consoles. Your party of console goddesses is searching for a precious book called Histoire, and they’ll butt heads with the villainous Arfoire — an embodiment of all that’s wrong in videogaming — while busting heads with combat abilities like Skills Links, character swapping mid-combo, and the ability to summon images stored on your PS3’s hard drive to gain a competitive edge.

Pzn9hKZan_M

So it's a game within a game...but we must go deeper.

Hey MODs, can we make this thread the general video game discussion thread? The current one is 95% of the time just a modern warfare/call of duty circle jerk bro fest.

Basically, stop being lame and they will stop making lame video games, as the customer is king in this situation.

I don't think anyone here is being lame. The reason we are talking about this is because we are dissatisfied with the state of the industry. It is hard because the majority of society will generally be satisfied with shiny graphics with no substance as long as they get a small degree of enjoyment out of it. As another user said, the culture in Japan that breeds JRPGs is extremely different from our own interests. Girly 15 year old protaganists may be cool to the Japanese majority. Thus, those types of games will continue to be made. This doesn't make us 'lame' and if we were to stop buying games like FF13 they would still be made because that is what the majority still wants. The term 'customer' as you use it implies equality but not all consumers are treated equally by the market.

FF7 was and will ever be the greatest RPG

Also, please don't start this argument.

This is more like a 2chan exclusive topic, or a gamefaqs message boards exclusive topic, or a gaia online exclusive topic.

Basically, stop being lame and they will stop making lame video games, as the customer is king in this situation.

Personally, my opinion of the japanese videogame consumer has fallen drastically in the span of the last decade. I also feel like my interest in anime took a significant dive during these past 10 years as well... were not gonna get into that because ATM anime is pretty geyasfuck and I have no interest in that topic of discussion however.....

Can't these SOBs see theyre getting their balls systematically removed everytime they play as a boygirl that can't find the dick he was born with? Apparently chicks are into JRPG's super tough over there? I feel like female gamers cause for a significant loss in game quality as well since they generally suck compared to accomplished male players. Are there exceptions? I guess. (PROBABLY NOT IF YOU REALLY THINK ABOUT IT) But to be frank, guy gamers VS female is like NBA vs WNBA imopinioney. This isn't hate neither, no bitch can see me in any game thats all it is.*** This ain't wii or guitar hero bullshit were talkin here either.

Am I the only one who liked Chrono Cross more than Trigger?

Yes.

But CC was a good solid RPG that just didn't have nearly as open a world as CT did. howevers, it was a great game (but to this day I feel like you played as that awkward lynx bro for way too long.. HE WAS NO MAGUS LET ME TELL YOU)

Chrono trigger was shitting on folks when it came to the tunes as well. I mean, like, s h i t t i n g. Like fallen said that wiz flow on schalas theme is a great example.

I don't think anyone here is being lame. The reason we are talking about this is because we are dissatisfied with the state of the industry. The way that it looks to me is that the major players in JRPG development at this point in time simply do not have the testies to man up and stop making pussy rpgs (SQUARE-ENIX HAS SOME CUNTWAD SHAREHOLDERS/BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR EXAMPLE). These things make $$$ because the consumer buying them now simply knows no better. To the current youth JRPG consumer, FFVII is a game they heard about after they played FFX-2, decided to give a try and could barely make it to the 2nd disc on their downloaded playstation network version.

Someone was all like, "oh this is a _chan/gamefaqs discussion" but to be honest those kids are too self obsessed/self-aware to know whats up. They take pride in how theyre shut-in gamers with short attention spans and have a played out obsession for memes and nonsequitur fan service.

My problem with western rpgs is they continually have some of the worst art direction you can lay your eyes on and as an artist/illustrator that kind of shit bugs the hell out of me. but theyre generally not pussed out storyplots, just tired medieval/northern euro settings that feel like theyre designed for people who can't get their heads out of lord of the ring's asshole.

If there was a balance of JRPG / WRPG that would be chill, but koreans only make MMORPGs and who wants to waste their life grinding away all day with that shit???????? ?

this thread is lame because it is on 2chan every day, and 2chan is lame.

it's also on 4chan every day, and 4chan is lame.

i know this is the trash, but i'd expect to see the kind of trash that is related at least in some way, to clothing and possibly mad stacks, or as has recently been brought to my attention(thanks zubin), eric glennie.

nicholas cage also qualifies, obviously.

the person who started this thread writes like a fucking moron and probably stumbledupon superfuture somehow, I don't know. If you are in your mid twenties and obsessing over terrible JRPGs, then I guess that's pretty sad and sure that's something that belongs in the trash because honestly that's pretty trashy to me. level up your character in real life, man.

Note that I said terrible JRPGs. If you want to talk about FFIV, FFVI, chronotrigger, DQ8, Persona, etc, then that's cool too to me, because Yoshitaki Amano is baller. Kain is my style inspiration, fuck Cecil. I want to get a magicite handjob from Terra while Kefka plays me Debussy standards, you know?

Further, RPG is not an accurate description. You do not "play a role". Your decisions, as the player, only shuttle the characters from place to place. If you want to talk RPGs to me, play planescape torment or baldurs gate, or fallout 2. Don't play fallout 2 without the patch. That would be bad.

A much more hilarious evisceration of JRPGs in general is given by the dude from zero punctuation but I don't feel like linking because I'm lazy and tired.

My point still stands: stop buying shitty games that cater to the doujin market and one day, some Japanese dude will stop browsing an incest forum for long enough to realize there is a market for RPGs with fucking substance, where the player does something meaningful, or substantial, that there is a market for games that don't simply have flashy battle systems with combo meters and terrible fucking stories(I am looking at you, tales of whatever except Abyss of the recent crop).

I understand you are only a small subset of the market, but so what? A democracy lends every vote equal value, regardless of whether you are on a winning or losing side and I can't think of a more subversive or complete democracy than rampant, parental guilt and escapism fueled consumerism.

Bear in mind this comes from someone that loved old JRPGs, still has zsnes on his work computer with chronotrigger, figured out the clock code on FFVI without a guide(and before gamefaqs existed), and didn't use the "clone excalibur" trick to beat FF IV.

I still love you though dude. Valley Girl changed my life.

Seriously check planescape torment. Art style takes a little getting used to esp if you're used to jrpg's but the setting and story is the best and most novel ever

There have been decent jrpgs on the ds not including the fantastic remakes but definitely more old school. But yeah would love a big budget one of ff6.'s calibre but unlikely cos no one has the patience for stuff that isn't flashy and shallow.

RandR, I don't think anyone hear actually disagrees with you about the big picture. So stop talking like it's your opinion vs. ours.

I don't go on 2chan or 4chan so I'm unaware of the conversations happening on those boards. I know them enough to say that its probably just an unintellectual mess though.

The types of JRPGs/RPGs everyone is mentioning are all on the same level of greatness, I think. Your opinion on what makes a good RPG is synonymous with the rest of the posters. The games you mentioned, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, etc., are games we are talking about. I thought this thread was about discussing great past JRPGs/RPGs because there are certainly more of them from the past than from the current gen.

I don't think anyone here fits your stupid consumer image either. I know one user previously posted that they don't own JRPGs for their PS3 because there haven't been any good ones. I know I subscribe to this. I don't buy games of the flashy bullshit variety either and I think the majority of the people in this thread do the same. So yes, we have been doing what you think the solution is but shitty games are still being made. I never said this was a bad idea or that we should just buy games like FFXIII because there isn't anything better to do. I'm just saying there are a decent number of gamers that don't buy into the flashy bullshitty games but they still get made because the majority doesn't know better.

My initial point still stands: we are all on the same side in this discussion. A discussion about old, great JRPGs/RPGs because the new ones ain't as good. I know you like being opinionated and fight with people (no hate) but in this case we are on the same side.

And yes, Valley Girl changes lives.

franklin, you and I are on the same side, yes.

Clearly there are dudes that are not, though...in this thread.

Like the guy who started the thread, who continues to post in a way that's offensive to me and completely blank-stare worthy, or that game linked in that video that's just shitty fan service and a stupid battle system ala "the atlus or that other company" way.

So while you and a few others clearly have good taste...man, that's why this thread shouldn't be here, because it turns into bullshit like

"Final Fantasy 7 is the best RPG of all time".

Man, really? Really? Does sufu need this incredibly stupid thread to be here at all? Can't we read a duplicate of this thread on any gaming website all across the information superhighway?

Let's get back to planning a sufu meetup to see season of the witch instead.

I just really want a video game discussion thread that isn't just a call of duty circle jerk like the current video game thread. Maybe this thread is just me grasping at straws.

The video linked earlier has potential to good in a Nic Cage sort of way. So terrible it's good. I'm just saying...think about it.

Come to LA and we'll watch Season of the With. Make it happen.

i used to be the biggest JRPG nerd until i 'quit' videogames (prob a move for the better) and sold my ps2 back in early '02. haven't played one since, although recently i've had the itch again. decided to look up square and found out they merged with enix a few years ago = MIND BLOWN.

Dude don't let him play you hes just as much as a fucking nerd as you are and he is no more right than any other almost 30 year old guy talking shit in the trash section of a fashion forum thats wayyyy past it's hay day in regards to relevant and entertaining topics. Its just JRPG guy dont rip your ass and run for your mydol over it.

If anything, you both can step off this mother if you're not down with the topic of discussion and FYI Call of fucking duty is shitting all over current JRPG so please do not hate because that is a very ugly and childish trait in human beings.

that trailer is the exact representation of what is wrong with current JRPG.

Frankly, Frank, I dont know how welcome you are in this thread anymore

if anyone decides to give Fallout 2 a shot, listen to RandR and make sure you download & install Killap's Restoration Pack/Patch. He fixed over 1,000 bugs from the retail release and added in a whole bunch of content the developers cut. That community made a great game even better!

Lol. Clearly you haven't been listen to me, 100%. That game being everything that is wrong with JRPG is exactly why I want to play it. Not because it will be good. In fact, it will be so far away from good that it will start to loop back around into the good category preciesly because it is so bad. Like a mobius strip of good and bad.

What are you even talking about? RandR is talking trash on current JRPGs. Isn't this exactly why you started the thread? I've been contributing a lot to that topic of discussion 100% so once again I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about.

Why you mad I'm hatin' on Call of Duty? If you like the complexity of RPGs and have made a thread to commemorate that, then why are you defending a game thats main selling point is its multiplayer competition? It seems like that is the complete opposite of what you're looking for in a game.

So let me get this straight, I'm no longer welcome in your thread that you created in the trash section of a fashion forum that is way past its hay day? Lol wut

the last 2 Personas really straddled that line between being like a Nicolas Cage film and being fucking legit.

100% call of duty is pretty awesome, but you're missing the point of everything that has been discussed in this thread. It's like you're transferring your hate on people who agree with you (that current jrpgs suck).

I'll be in Cali sometime in late March(potentially) and god willing, Nic Cage will have another movie out then that is also terribleeeeeeeeely good. If not there's that Justin Bieber film: Never Say Never. If you want to come hang out in Newport Coast, you're welcome to swing by, of course.

and 100%, your username is very apropos, as you are 100% retarded. Take this shit back to the ign boards, please, where you can open "your thread" again.

sum of the bright spots this gen on ps3. i miss the good ol snes/ps1 days like everyone else but since not every jrpg that gets released on consoles will sell as well as Demon's Souls it wouldn't be realistic to expect an increase in new jrpg's on consoles for everywhere outside Japan.

i bought 3d dot heroes because of the hype and quickly sold it to a korean guy on craigslist.

I was hoping for more of a link's awakening, atlus was thinking more of a zelda 1 with blocks that explode everywhere.. LETS JUST SAY the game was MUNDANE AS HELL.

Valkyria was super promising, but i must admit I didn't give it too much time after I rented it because other shit was popping off besides it. I might rent it sometime again though and give it another shot (prob not though).
