The storytelling is now generic and laughable (MGS4 [i KNOW MGS4 IS NOT A JRPG BUT WOW WHAT A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A SHITTY WAY TO END A DECENT STORYPLOT]), game play is shit (FFXIII), characters are either bitch looking or bitches themselves (designed to get fucked in doujins that hit the market before the game is even released overseas) (FFXIII AGIN). Graphics aren't really a big deal these days as gameplay can outshine the way a game looks (ex minecraft)... but the question is: Do the japanese just suck at making RPGs now?

^^ Agree with the PSP comments. Even if a game is considered pretty good for the PSP I just really don't enjoy playing hand held games. Would much rather play on consoles. I do, however, make exceptions for really great games.

I wouldn't considered Demon Souls jrpg. Sure, it was made it Japan, but it doesn't have the same thematic or game play elements as a jrpg. Just a westernized rpg made in Japan. Still pretty fun, regardless. Ending was pure shit though.

I don't think you should give up on Square. I think you should give up on Square-Enix. Everything Square did before merging with Enix was fantastic. They made all the FF up until 10, Chrono Trigger, Kingdom Hearts, Secret of Mana, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story etc. It's too bad the merger has pushed them into the world of cliche.

10 was made by Square. I enjoyed it alot as well. I actually really like 12 too. Not so much the story but I thought the battle system was pretty damn good and kept me interested the whole game. It was like FF11 but an offline version. All the benefits of an MMO without the M, M or the O. Same irrelevant story concept though.

Yeah, current gen hasn't been too good recently. NIS America has two games coming out this year that are worth looking into. Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel and Hyperdimension Neptunia. The latter being the one I'm looking forward to the most. It looks soo ridiculous. In a good way. So Japanese and over the top its amazing. I'm sure you'd be into it Gatefold since it is almost on the verge of being softcore hentai and I know you're into tentacle porn n' shit.

Go back and play OLD turn-based RPGs produced in the west. Some of them were straight up amazing. Wizardry 8 comes to mind.

The problem is that with the ever-increasing graphics and short-attention-span of gamers, making RPGs that actually have good interfaces, stories, etc really just dries up.

I am still hoping for a real return to good turn based battle RPGs with good stories and extremely long gameplay. I still play wiz8 since there have been an extensive number of fan-created mods to it and even the original plotline can take weeks to complete...

Hasn't been a REALLY good JRPG lately, the kind that really sticks with you. Last great ones were Persona 3 and 4 I think, but the setting's pretty unconventional for the genre, but maybe that's why they were outstanding. Any current-gen ones that are decent? Haven't got a single RPG on my PS3... Thinking of Eternal Sonata. My favourites are still the 16-bit era ones back when the only console I could afford were SNES emulators (ie free) and the PS1 ones, when graphics still weren't the primary selling point.

Don't give up on western RPG's though. Planescape: Torment is my no. 1 game/story of all time.

Also, RE: Square making pussy main chars, I'd read somewhere that it's because it's just what RPG fans in Japan prefer or something, in an interview about why the FFXII main char is a 15 year old pansy. I think they just keep trying to replicate the success of FFVII.

I don't they are dead.. They have been using the same formula for years now and they are just now trying to reinvent it so they can reach a newer audience and fans who bitch about how it's the same shit every time.

I would say try the Mother series just because of how good the writing and humor is even though they play a lot like Dragon Warrior

Also (even though I have never played the series) I would check out Persona and any subsequent games for that series. I hear nothing but good things about those games so...

the newer Shin Megami Tensei games for the DS are suppose to be great as well so I don't the genre is dead I just feel there aren't as many good ones out there anymore. I guess you just gotta look around and find what's worth playing because there is a lot of shit out in the genre

FF13 was such as disappointment. Sure the graphics are awesome, but that doesn't make a great game. I get the impression that developers are spending too much effort focusing on graphics. I did enjoy the battle system though (probably way too late in the game, felt that the learning curve was a little steep or maybe i'm just getting old). I've played all FF games except the first one and the online stuff and pretty liked every single one of them up to this....
