What is the appeal of denim contests?

I´d like to enter a contest. I tried with Roy but I was too late...;(

The reason for me would be if I could stay with one pair of jeans for like 2 years as I tend to buy more jeans then I need. But to me a contest is also appealing just because it´s a pretty "cool" thing to do with a pair of jeans.

With that said I do find it to be a little thing that people do to show how spectacular they can fade their jeans. And also show the world they "know" denim.

It´s one more thing to me...people who have the same interests always tend to come together for "crazy" stuff. BUT I also think it´s a kind of interacting thing that they want to share and tell people how they live through their jeans.

That´s just me folks...

like SwedeAlex i have never taken part in a contest. I agree that one of the cool parts of following a contest is being able to see how different lifestyles, occupations, etc., can affect how a pair of jeans turn out.

there is one thing that irks me though -- if you sign up for a contest and agree to what necessarily comes along with participation, you should post regularly. i'm not suggesting that participants need post pics every week or anything, but rather that they should provide updates with some regularity. once a month seems reasonable. the LVC contest thread is always dead as fuck because hardly anyone posts. its the same 3-4 people all the time. why sign up if you don't intend to be involved? even if you haven't been able to wear the jeans as much as you'd like you can still be creative -- take a few pics anyway.

I am guessing that the appeal is camaraderie,

That, and it's just fun to participate in. I enjoyed the Full Count contest, and the LVC contest has been okay so far (need's a lot more participation and updates though). But, when the LVC one is done, I'm done with contests for a while (unless a Lee one were to pop up!). Seems like with each contest, more and more people are joining just to get a pair of special jeans, or get them at a reduced price, and they could care less about wearing the jeans daily and posting updates. Makes things pretty boring. Hopefully the Roy contest changes that trend.

A shame about the LVC, I hadn't particularly noticed that. Like lots of things in life, people start out with good intentions. But the best example of future behaviour is past behaviour. Hopefully this will see us thru the ROY thread.

A few people were moaning recently that SuFU was getting boring... I think in terms of denim knowledge, it has pretty much burned itself out, with (except for the welcoem arrival of sansome) pretty much the same info being reycled ad infinitum. But I"m happy that with the roy comp we have a lot of people who've brought SuFU to a new level, particulalry around the wayjdt thread, by far the most interesting corner of the place for me. By their actions shall thou judge them.

Paul,

I think you've just killed sufu. Would the last poster please turn off the lights.

On a positive note, I'll have lots more time back in my life!

^Sorry my bad.

Contest hasn't even started yet and I'm too big for me boots.

..can send you signed photos of my Roys if you like (1)

.

If you ever get them...

Don't you think it's too much of a coincidence about Roy's wisdom teeth and the fact that there were some unhappy sufuers that didn't make the cut?

Conspiracy theories abound.

I think its interesting that in response to the 'why contests' question people are citing a desire to wear *one* pair of jeans exclusively for an extended period, and the degree of commitment that a contest can inspire, as their primary motivation. I'll have to involve myself in a future contest. I haven't stuck with one pair for more than a month or two in a long while. It used to be that I was a one pair sorta guy, but in the last couple years I've often found myself rotating 3-4 pairs. It's just that its damned hard to limit one's self to a single pair for daily use when there's a pair of warehouse 800's or LVC '55's or Ooe 02's that deserve attention. I sort of attempted a half-assed entry into the LVC contest last year. Having just a few weeks before ordered a pair of '67's from cultizm I thought I might be able to participate -- I'd produce proof that the 67's had in fact been purchased from cultizm, snap a few shots of the basically unworn jeans, and agree to end a month before the other participants. Christ! you've never heard so much bitching! I received several pissy pms letting me know that my proposal was outrageous, and that I was a bum for for having even conceived of it. and now look, that thread is, for the most part, good for shit (apologies to the guys that do post -- you know who you are. there has been some really good stuff.)

The eternal 811 contest has been cool so far, and promises to get really interesting a little further down the road.
