Seems my post was omitted from my own thread, don't try this at home folk, it's only for professionals!!

I'm talking about the brown belt with the quick release brass horn buckle, how much were those?

$170 at Drinkwaters in Cambridge - considerably cheaper than at MAC or Odin, IRRC. Closed Sundays. Tell Gary that Fok says hi

Okay that confirms what I already thought, I saw it for $160 Canadian and it wasn't even discounted, I must grab it!! I have no idea why it's priced that low (all things being relative) because the store I saw it in is usually competitive with the best US prices but doesn't undercut them.

I do prefer brown belts and I doubt that I'll splurge for two so I'll probably end up getting the brown one...I don't think any color is a bad choice as it is a very nice looking belt. I tried on the 32" (right size for a 29-30 waist size) and didn't have a lot of tongue showing but I guess that's what EG were after; something less RnRoll and more "trad" although in a more streetwearish sense. I might size up if I feel like it.

To the two posters who msged me about the store, I'll just talk to the owner next time I pass by (he's not there everyday), I'm a good client so I'll see what he thinks. I'll then post the info. BTW don't forget that there's a 15% sales tax, conversion rate (US to CAN), shipping rate and possibly customs to pay which might make Drinkwater a better (or equivalent) choice for americans.

Engineered Garments is the US arm of Nepenthes. The designer is based out of NYC, but the parent company is Japanese.

They are, AFAIK, not available online, but can be seen in the last picture on the first row of the S/S 2006 "Collections" www.engineeredgarments.com and also in the very last picture. The buckle is what makes the belt special - it is based off of an old military quick release belt. The leather is English bridle leather, really well made. The brown version has a solid brass buckle - super tough.

From your post, you are based in England/London? I'm not sure what, if any, stockists there are for his belts in England, (yes, his jeans are really well made), but Drinkwaters will probably ship.

Ok. I really like engineered Garments stuff, even though I've only seen one piece -a pair of jeans with gorgeous details at the Duffer shop - but what's so special about this belt that makes it $180? I'm interested. Are they available online, or can you post a pic?

Sadly I can't find Engineered Garments homepage (wird O_o), maybe one of the 20 or so styleforum posters who bought the belt can post a picture.

As for the quality/pricepoint it is of course up to you to decide if paying that much money for a belt is something you want/can afford to do but keep in mind that EG clothes and leather goods are more in league with high-quality designer repros/retro inspired stuff (think mark jacobs or cloak) than with cheaper products. In other words this belt is quite reasonnably priced for a high quality bridle leather belt with some nice touches (quick release, brass buckle).

Thanks guys. Belt sounds gorgeous and I'll check out their website after I'm done here. I'm absolutely not adverse to spending that much on a belt it was just whenever I hear "quick release" I have visions of a nylon webbing/plastic thing happening. In this case especially, given that EG acknowledge their subtle military influences.

Thanks for the link LAGuy.

I tried on the shirt in the first picture, you can't see in clearly but it has vertical silver threads running every few inches which really gives it a cool edge.

My favorite piece isn't on the website though, it's a kind of military shirt/light coat with loads of utility pockets and butonnable vented cuffs, in a kind of turquoise color.

.. I only said I get visons of a nylon webbing thing! Checked the site out and Hoh yeah. Bingo

that is a gorgeous piece ... think I'd do the brown one if I could get my hands on it ...

After I'll have talked to the owner and posted his store info in here feel free to give him a call....contrary to US posters it's definitely a good idea to order from Canada.

Got the brown belt today. Might get another color later on if they still have my size, btw the EG collection is particularly strong this season, I sincerely hope it gets more recognition.

You can get the store's phone number on this website:

They are getting a lot more recognition. Steven Alan even mentions them in the latest GQ. It's doing good business in Japan, it is carried in an increasing number of stores, all good ones. (MAC in SF, Steven Alan in NYC, and I think Odin as well. Bloomingdales Soho had them - don't know if it still does. Drinkwaters in Boston has them as their "core" younger casual brands which is going to be really strong next winter, etc...)

Nomad will be stocking Engineered Garments soon.

Yeah, one of the owners (Jay?) told me about it when I visited. It remains to be seen how it will mesh with the kind of crowd they're deserving (not that I know, just guessing by the collections they have). They're selling more "hyped" labels, popular with the young, urban, post-skater crown, EG seems to be aimed at a slightly older, more "settled" market from what I've seen.

Yes, I think it's a bit of a departure from what they have at the moment but I think it'll work well for a variety of reasons.

Not all the brands Nomad sells are "hyped" labels; in fact, I'd say the only ones are Supreme (which is mainly a "doorbuster/cachet" brand), Acronym, and perhaps Visvim (well, I guess Nom de Guerre, too..). Other than that -- Spruce, Wings & Horns, Nonnative, Sandinista, Corpus, Filson -- it's all very well-made, minimal gear that certainly isn't aimed at a "young urban" crowd. So I think EG, while definitely having an "older" aesthetic, will blend in well, because of its qualities (superbly well-made, well-designed, etc.)

also if LA Guy is right, and E.G. is becoming a "hot new thang" so to speak then it'll be great for Nomad to have since Nomad will likely be the only Toronto retailer stocking it (much like Supreme).

If the sale is still on, yes, all of it except the belts which are new arrivals. A few of the plaid shirts left last time I talked to Gary, a few of the fishermen's shirts and barn jackets, some random pieces from EG's first season. Some other stuff I don't remember. If the sale is done, PM me.

Probably you are thinking about Jesar. Engineered Garments is probably unique in its approach to "Americana". Daiki Suzuki is meticulous in sourcing original manufacturers to make the original product, in novel fabrics, with a twist. He takes great care in sourcing just the right materials and the construction of the garments are pretty much unparalleled at the high-mid pricepoint.

I don't know if Engineered Garments is "the next big thing". But it's only its 5th season, and without much in the way of press, people are seeing that it really is a quality product, excellent in both conception and execution. The accessories (bags and belts) are similarly impressive.

does anyone know where i can find a 1.5 inch quick release buckle in brass like EG uses? why is this so fucking hard to find a good one? anyone wanna go halves on a belt, I buy it, cut the buckle off and you get the leather?

Search the other SF, there was someone who did just that (find a similar buckle as separate), dunno if the info disappeared in the crash...

i actually bought a danes and hahaway one last week. called the US office and had them order me one. anyone who has the EG one, are they 1.5" for the belt, or is it less? the brass buckle for danes isn't as shiny for their belt. good leather though

Belt is 1'1/8".
