If you want a band that sounds more like CYHSY and Modest Mouse, I second the recommendation for Wolf Parade and Tapes n Tapes. I'd also definitely check out Cold War Kids and Bound Stems.

popmatters.com picks up a lot of the same stuff as pitchfork but reviews a broader range of media (movies, books, comics, video games, dvds, etc.) and a lot of their reviews are on artists that aren't as obscure as those favored by pitchfork but still mostly off the beaten path. they also review a wider a range of music which is good for those of us who get tired of wading through all the hard-to-listen-to stuff that pitchfork deals with. more in tune with my tastes and without a lot of the pretension.

and +1 on slayer, airportlobbytx. i've never been into metal but i do like "christ illusion" quite a bit, even if only as a novelty.

I actually heard of The Shins from the movie Garden State but never really looked up into it. They're a pretty cool band.
