i dunno-amex blue feels like buying diffusion.

It may not be a status symbol, but it definitely gets the job done. Cash back + no annual fee is a pretty good deal. Also, it looks really cool, for whatever that's worth. I personally don't see what I'd get from paying the annual membership fees for other AMEX cards, so I'm in no hurry to change my card.

Customer service is better on the more expensive cards and there are some perks like first class companion flight ticket free for every one you purchase, financial advisor, access to airline lounges, extended warranties on every purchase.

I remember I bought a lcd tv and 2 days later it was 80 dollars cheaper on another site, so I called amex, they just asked me to fax them a printout of the website, and they just credited my card.

ive never had a credit card before. thought they were scary. but the word "rewards" intrigues me. so basically, they dont charge interest unless you dont make a full monthly payment right?

Yea, CC's are daunting at first but the reality is if don't drive yourself into debt they're fantastic. Just be wary of ones with annual fees or minimum charges.

*edit

When I was selling audio gear some kid came in totally sufu'ed out with a amex black card (thing is fucking HEAVY) and bought like 5k worth of speakers for an office. Wonder if he posts here.

For those of you who have the AMEX Platinum or Gold, what benefits besides the no credit limit enticed you to get the cards? I see the post above about better service so I am talking about other benefits as in increased credit score, etc. I have an AMEX blue and have been continuously receiving preapprovals for the Gold and Platinum but cannot bring myself to pay $150 or $450/yr for them.

And I use Amex blue and Citi Platinum Worldcard.

Better customer service. The CS reps get increasingly nicer and card replacement is easier and faster.

The centurion and platinum offer concierge service. They can find you all kinds of shit. Also, AMEX has reservations to popular restaurants e.g. nobu in NYC.

I forgot the exact detail but if you purchase a plane ticket thru them, you can take another person with you for free.

as far as i know, there's not much difference between AMEX blue and gold besides the "oh im not a peasant" factor.

I've already been pre-approved for AMEX Plat and Business Plat for a while now. I am not jetsetting or running a business so I just use my gold for now. Pointless to pay for services that I don't use.

Capital One Visa was my first CC but like someone else said, I only use it when someone doesn't accept the AMEX.

This is one of the worst threads created so far.

CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME.

BUY BUY BUY.

Yeah I know. Let's neg rep the OP. We on Sufu practice frugality not endless consumerism.

Anyways, I didn't know that about credit unions and since I basically have no credit I think I'm going to start with that. Thanks.

amex is a good card but the stores accepting them seem to be declining... I stick with my trusty Visa

I've noticed this too lately. Stores that used to accept it don't anymore wonder why...?

yea I kind of figured that but, it was in stores that I had recently used it in like 2-3 months ago and not any more. Guess everybody is trying to get the most $$$ out of their sales.

Capital One Visa.... its the BEST card for charging things when abroad.... 0% foreign exchange transaction fees (they absorb the 1% fee Visa/Mastercard charges) but make sure to call them before you start using the card abroad... or else its a bitch to unblock it

platinum visa (7.99 fixed)

discover miles

student visa

some mastercard that i never use

i could close some accounts, but i don't really see the point. i've had the student visa since 04 so i want to keep that credit history. i never use the mastercard, but i don't see any reason to diminish my available credit, as i pay no fees on the open account.

i also have a debit card, but who doesn't

My Chase Freedom card nets me about $500 in cash back annually and if you save up $200 worth of points, you get an extra $50. I think the amount per purchase back is 3% at most food/grocery places, 3% at their partner retailers linked from their site, and 1% on everything else. I'll probably switch to an air mile card next year though.
