This is still one of the best Macs ever made 12" PowerBook G4

powerbookg412zc6.jpg

I totally agree, wish I had not sold mine.

But I love my macbook pro appart from the fact it's a bit to heavy to be carrying around all the time I think it is the best mac I have ever owned when I take into account it has replaced not only my PowerBook but my G5 as well.

I quite fancy a macbook air as my portable email and web machine, but it's to expensive to justify at the moment, I keep getting tempted with buying another 12' PowerBook on ebay but don't really want to take the risk.

As for design call me a fan boy but i think the current line of macs are the best looking notebooks I have seen, Ive is a pupil of Dieter Rams the greatest product designer ever. Plus I don't really fancy using anything but OSX

You can check on craigslist. I've got 2 for under $400 each. My friend got one for $200 that only needed battery replacement. I've go multiple iBooks for under $100 that were apparently broken but it was always a dumb user who didn't have a clue.

I can't wait till people will start getting Air and complain how CS3 runs slow on it or try it as their super cool dj'ing machine. It's good for surfing the web and email but it shouldn't be treated like a powerful portable.

also, their recent surge in popularity is something which makes me hesitate towards purchasing one. the idea of blowing a grip on something fancy only to walk into a lecture where a third of the people have the same computer as me puts me off. in my environment, apple products are becoming more and more generic. I don't want to come off as superficial, but something unique would be nice.

In short, I want to select the best design, which I am having a hard time finding.

I laughed a little. If you're looking for the best design get a Mac, if you don't want it to look like every other computer put a Supreme sticker on it. It's a fucking computer not a fashion accessory. Who are you Paris Hilton? You can always send you Mac for a custom case and get it in pink with Swarovski crystals or you can get the leather Lenovo

They're not the first to put a SSD hard drive in, it just seems like maybe they'll be able to push it forward. What I can't believe is that the 80GB is a Parallel ATA. I didn't notice that till now but that really blew my mind. Every other notebook in their line is SATA.

well, mac never really is first to incorporate technology into anything (think ipod) but they get all the credit for it.

how well do those things run windows xp?

also, how pleasant is web browsing on such a screen?

this might be a decent alternative to the x505.

Runs XP pretty well. EEE PCs in Japan come preinstalled with them. I didn't make the switch though. The stock Linux OS is good enough for me, but I enabled the advanced mode (the easy mode looks kiddy). Even though I'm a complete Linux noob, instructions are easily found online how to do it (the wiki at http://forum.eeeuser.com/). They have videos on youtube of people with theirs on XP, might wanna check that out.

The screen is a bit small sometimes, such as with some websites or applications with toolbars taking up working space (powerpoints), but I can read off mine easily.

The keyboard might take some time getting used to if you have big fingers, but I got piano fingers so it's not so bad. I'm actually typing this up on my EEE PC right now.

As you can see it is really small. The picture shows me using AIM on it.

hmm..

I like the design of the eeepc

it looks well sorted out

the only thing I dont like about it is the 800x480 screen

$400 + tax sound a bit steep for it

the x505 on the other hand has a 1024x768 display, so browsing is no problem

if only I could find one

Well apparently from reading some articles from Appleinsider.com they're soon to release an update of the Macbook Pro sometime late February. There is no definite date, which is a bit of a let down. Nothing looks that updated besides a newer black keyboard, processor upgrade, and a possibly larger trackpad with more features that the Macbook Air has. Either way I hope to pick one up soon if it's not going to be delayed.

Here are some mock-up designs that.. I don't think are believable at all, but nice to look at: http://www.engadget.com/photos/macbo...is-you/644845/

They just came out with a new blackbook today man, purchase right now and forget about the refurb. Macbooks won't get an LED monitor for a long time, maybe a multitouch later if they do a form factor switch (maybe September?)....

here's a quick review of the x200: http://gizmodo.com/5034800/lightning-review-lenovo-thinkpad-x200, basically, no trackpad, screen's dim, but good battery, keyboard, and solid build quality.

the air is pretty and all, its got a decent battery life, a slow HD (could be bad, depending what you are going to use it for) a kick ASS screen, comes wiht integrated webcam, massive trackpad.

it really comes down to what you are going to be using it for

if not the macbook pro, why not the macbook air, or just the regular macbook? The specs are good and they are far more portable than the pro

powerbook/mbp is arguably the best laptop design of all time

I really like the way it's designed - nothing comes close

that's the only reason why I'm considering it

you could say I'm 'desperately' looking for a substitute

apple's other notebooks are nothing special

the non-pro is made from welfare-ass plastic

and I don't like the one with no CDROM

Macbook pros are not portable, have you thought how big of a foot print you want your laptops to have?

Sony has some nice looking small foot print laptops.

I want two (2) machines

one for mobile computing

and the other for everything else

let's assume I buy the 15 inch pro

what would be the ideal counterpart

Macbooks are NOT portable honestly, i have one. And would not call it portable, so do not get it.

The 9" laptop with Atom, they are light, and cheap. This would be, Asus E901,

The Atom laptops will be light and have a small footprint and will enable you to watch some 720P movies, dvix movies, browsing and word.

Then you have the types of Mac Air that are light, but are with a big footprint (as big as the macbook in footprint) but still light.

Now, the Macbook Pro spec wise is overkill for you,but you get a nice design in terms of laptops. (Some say they will be redesigned in September...go to www.macrumors.com buyer's guide). But I think it is a nice buy if you dont mind the overstep in price from Macbooks as you get a bigger screen.

Macbook Pro + Asus 901 (Or any of the 9 inch laptops with Atom CPU...(Just avoid Acer). Also avoid HP as their mini laptop uses a different CPU which isnt as good but they are going to release one with Atom. Atom is the way to go)

But if you think a 11.1" laptop is better for your portable needs, then Lenovo, and Sony have great options (bit pricey but nice design)

Example of a 11.1 inch lenovo u110-1l.jpg

sa_black.jpg

Is a 7 inch laptop on the AMD chipset with touch screen sensitivity, you can flip the screen so it becomes a tablet.

There are also smaller Laptops, that are 5.6 inch screen, but the keyboard is completely cramped.
