You would be surprised. I work in IT and I'm getting 3 of those for my clients. Neither of them are heavy travelers but they want something light when they leave town. I'm sure I'll have around 10 orders by the weekend. People said the same thing about the iPhone, it's too expensive and almost nobody will buy it and now we've seen the numbers...

My fault I left out the people with money to throw away.

The iPhone seems WAY more practical than the Air.

Ain't no moving parts! Theoretically it'll boot up cold in about 15-20 seconds... there's a video on youtube of a modded SR MBP 2.4 with a 64 SSD... 22 seconds to desktop. Less power consumption to boot.

no moving parts, faster seek time, heats up quicker. its like comparing transistors to tubes!

I promised myself that i would get the new MB when it came out, but now im not 100% sure...hmmm.

Ill have ot give this MBA some serious thought..

That's what I thought but as Macworld came closer and there was more speculation about the price I decided just to get the MacBook and I'm glad I did. It definitely is not something to replace the MB or MBP and being a college student, the Air would have been unnecessary for me.

For a coffee table computer though, there is probably no better (mostly for the hype factor this will carry for awhile).

With all this talk of Manilla envolopes Apple decided to release this bad boy. What a deal.

...But in all seriousness, I am very intrested in seeing if Apple can actually usher in the new generation by eradicating the optical drive. I'm not sure I speak for everyone, but I feel that if I bought this MBA I would probably end up buying the superdrive as well.

The whole point of this is ultimate portability and ease of use, so I think people who want this to be a MacBook replacement should realize this is a different product. I think that Jobs wanted to have a Macbook, Macbook Pro, and Macbook Air to complete the family, not have one replace the other.

Apple made a good point of suggesting that this is a secondary computer or a road warriors and not something that a home user should have if they don't have a different machine already. Remote disc: http://images.apple.com/macbookair/images/wireless_illustration20080115.png I think it's really a pretty clever solution if you already own another computer.

As well as a wireless data migration, and external solutions like time capsule if you don't have a different setup already. Either way, its a nice computer but I'm much happier with my Macbook.

They aren't trying to eradicate the optical drive, just provide a more portable computer. Its not like when they took out the floppy and pretty much said tough. This time, they went the extra mile to give software that allows you to use another computer's optical drive wirelessly.

It all depends on need. I know I pretty much never use my optical disc for anything.

The big thing is the incorporation of solid state. This is definitely the beginning of a new era in hard drive technology.

They're not the first to put a SSD hard drive in, it just seems like maybe they'll be able to push it forward. What I can't believe is that the 80GB is a Parallel ATA. I didn't notice that till now but that really blew my mind. Every other notebook in their line is SATA.

Macworld was pretty cool, I went on the 15th right after the keynote and got to play around with the air. It really is tiny but not really suitable for a majority of people, especially those looking to "make the switch" (I own an Imac, but I'm talking about others here) I really dig timecapsule but Apple is again up to their usual shenanigans by making it only currently compatible with the Air just to help promote their new ultra thin. Lack of a firewire port might be somewhat of a problem (for me at least) and I'm not quite sure how much Apple is sacrificing to pave the way for ultraportables, but I think they are moving in the right direction. I wanted to see some MB and MBP upgrades, but I guess ill have to wait another 6+ months for that.

iPhone pic from the demo area:

ps. If anyone was wondering, for a highly compressed notebook and a very thin horizontal fan, heating issues were minimal from my brief encounter. (they were demoing them for a couple of hours prior to my arrival, take it as you will)

It looks (and I just say looks) like it's going to be kind of mediocre. The latest generation of the Lenovo T series have this same casing, and it's much less overbuilt than the earlier generations. That being said, it's nice to see the 13.3" ultralights come out. My 12 inch X60 is a little cramped, and the current sonys which seem to dominate the all day on the road segment are nice but I could use a bit more screen very happily. As long as it has a usable battery life unlike the MBA I'm happy. I'll pay an extra .5-.75 pounds for the jump in screen real estate.

the more I think about this, the more difficult it gets to make a decision

...

will the next macbook pro refresh be significant, or is it better to buy now?

Rumors are that the new macbook pro (whenever that comes out) will have the larger/multitouch trackpad and may take some design styles from the air. It also should come out soon to accommodate the new Penryn chips from Intel.

Dunno when tho.

Unfortunately, as you wait technology always falls behind, that's just the nature of the industry.

if you're afraid of not having the newest apple product, it's always a bad time to buy a mac.

Very true.

Right now I wouldn't buy the new MacBook Pro, I would wait till the next processor upgrade and the new trackpad. To be honest I still didn't get any Intel Mac (I have about 6-7 PowerPC Macs) and the only one I would get now is the new iMac which is a great buy for the money.

This is still one of the best Macs ever made 12" PowerBook G4

If you need a PC right now I would get the Lenovo X series (there are always coupons for them) or one of those thin Dells. Reinstall with basic XP and you're good to go.

I've read that the penryn macbook pros were scheduled to be released at macworld, but there were problems with a specific mobo component. I think it's safe to say that the penryn pros should be coming soon (within next 5 months).

eh lol

It's not really like that with me. I don't mind if what I am using is old. I just want what will suit my needs. nonetheless, a new processor intro is rather significant, so it would be wiser to wait.

for what I'm looking for, buying a mac would seem to be a logical solution. however, I'm still reluctant to give my money to this company. I'm not a big apple fan, and I'm not too keen on where I think their company/brand is headed. I do like a few of their items (3rd gen ipod for example), but beyond those few things, there's not much I like about them.

also, their recent surge in popularity is something which makes me hesitate towards purchasing one. the idea of blowing a grip on something fancy only to walk into a lecture where a third of the people have the same computer as me puts me off. in my environment, apple products are becoming more and more generic. I don't want to come off as superficial, but something unique would be nice.

In short, I want to select the best design, which I am having a hard time finding.
