It's from the white vinyl bag that they use. There's white residue or something like it inside the bag and it rubs off. I wondered the same thing for a while.

This is incorrect actually. I have returned stuff, and even managed to do it once more than a month later with no receipt.

As long as the stuff is in perfect condition you should be able to get store credit.
