shared internet and pr0n

i'm really ignorant about anything beyond how to use google

so i'm about to move from a solo spot (hence all the beat-off jokes) to a house with roommates, probably with shared wireless but possibly with a shared cable connection

how does this work vis a vis other people being able to see where i go online?

obviously, i'm asking in part because of my occasional forays into certain, uh, unorthodox realms of the adult content universe

but there's other stuff i'd like to keep private as well

how does this work with a shared connection? i know there are ways to keep your browsing activity to yourself, but are they typically standard features?

sorry, xtreme noobish shit, but i've never shared internet before

did some googling but mostly found a bunch of confusing stuff

i just had to quote that pic, it's pretty funny. but to answer your question, you don't have to be some sort of computer genius to see a log of where every computer that's on your network. If you're hooked into a router, wireless or otherwise, if someone who set up your router logs into admin 192.168.1.1, they'll be able to check a realtime log of where you go on the interwebz. it's actually a lot easier than i explained it

More importantly, why do you care if your roomates know you download porn from the internet? Downloading porn from the internet is what 90% of all network bandwidth is used for anyways, and they'll all KNOW that you're downloading it because you'll be lending them your 4.6gig DVD-R copy of Tranny Holes 45.

But most home routers don't even have this kind of logging option, and the ones that do don't enable it by default except maybe something like 'last 5 connections made'

quite frankly it depends on how your network is set up. IF you have a router and IF the router is capable of tracking that sort of thing and IF it's set up to do so and IF one of your roomates knows how to look then it MAY be possible. The only sure-fire way is if you're a network security specialist.

Boner, you should probably worry about people getting onto your computer – across the network or directly via the keyboard – before you start worrying about people sniffing your packets.

.

Can I sniff your packet? no homo...

yeah, i guess it's not really a big deal

i know being this obsessive about secrecy makes me sound shady and/or paranoid, and i'm not really

i suppose i'll live

and the sheer volume of porn admitted to above makes me realize that, if anything, i don't spend enough time looking at the stuff

um, i'll be back in a week
