Bootcut. Still cool? Or dumb as hell?

I have personally always liked a little bootcut in my denim pantaloons. It was mega popular for designers (lol diesel) to make big ol bootcuts just a year ago, but now the attention has been shifted to tapered legs and straight legs. I think that skinny tapered legs look like shit and can only reasonably be worn by slender women and slender, girly men.

Straight legs have really grown on me, but I will always have a special place in my heart for bootlegs.

PS- Nudie Olas vs. ralfs (what are the differences?)

edited for unnecessary comment that might be inflammatory.

I think a very slight bootcut (if you can see the bootcut by glancing at the jean while it's on the rack, that's always too much) can be pulled off with the right body type and the right shoes.

Can you elaborate? I think that tasteful bootcuts work pretty much on everyone.

And yeah... Diesel was notorious for its huge fucking bootcuts. Zathans fit fantastically, but their bootcut was laughably huge.

i think that sort of statement will get you plenty of flak especially here...i do agree that tapered legs are not a very democratic cut. but bear in mind that there are tapered but regular cuts as well, and that plenty of skinny jeans (which i'm sure you're referring to) are cut straight down the legs.

as for that dressing and self-presentation bit, i think it's a personal thing...everyone would like the world to dress this way or that, but after awhile you figure that since nobody can agree how other people should dress anyway just draw on these angsty skater teens as material for some snide humour on bad days.

fakeedit: ^^ I, personally, would look bad in those. Those particular tapered jeans fit your style very well.

Jesus. I'm not attacking anyone. Just voicing opinion. Its cool if you disagree.

Yeah people thought bootleg was the "most democratic" just like they thought slim tapered was the shit in 1990. In 1990 you would have been beaten to death and called homo for wearing any sort of flare on the bottom.

Seems like so many 28-34 year old willy nillys (my age group) are so afraid of skinny jeans. Maybe Afraid to give up on their $3000 diesel collection? Approximately 0% of your wardrobe will stay fashionable forever.

neither am i...i'm just saying that voicing opinion in this way usually leads to personal attacks and a general bad air about the thread.

ralfs do come with a tiny bit of bootcut, if you compare the hem and knee widths you'll see. i think bootcuts can look decent on the right people...

I totally agree with you, but SuperFuture is a very close-minded forum. You will receive lots of hate from just about everyone for any opinion you have that differs--even slightly--from their own.

You can't actually discuss anything on this forum. Discussion threads become a flamewar by about the fifth reply.

The way you started the thread was a bad idea too.

Always? really? If you are over 30 I would love to see a pic of you from around 1989. I dont remember anyone wearing boot cut at that time

the ralf is a pretty standard straight leg jean with a bit of a bootcut.

the ola is a low-rise jean that's very slim, also with a bit of a bootcut. the ola denim is also quite lightweight (great for summertime) and takes quite a while to fade.

Bootcut jeans were never cool.

And your comment about "skaters" illustrates you know nothing about skateboarding.

As someone who spent their nearly their entire childhood skateboarding, I would have to disagree. My comment (which was edited out before i saw your post) was criticizing how a sport has become corrupted by the image that precedes it. I didn't intend to make blanket statements and such, sorry.

Bootcut will always be okay, it's just that it was taken too far and worn by people who didn't know(care) how to dress, so everyone associates the word with 'that' look(I think you know what I mean.)

A moderate bootcut certainly looks good and enables you to wear slim jeans with boots. Start rocking bootcuts now and you can say it's played in 2 years when it becomes popular again. I got a pair of Wrangler Blue Bell bootcut cords a while a go, I'm so cool

i'm actually keen on seeing the photos like Tarmac says - a good and decent pair of bootcuts are hard to find these days.

I really like the RRL slim bootcut and think it would appeal to a lot of people here.

I know people hate on me for having a lot of pre-washed denim but I'm all for variety. Sometimes I want something tight, sometimes loose, sometimes straight, sometimes bootcut. I own levis 646 repros which I love and those have MUCH bigger bootcuts than zathan. I'm all for the wear-what-you-like mentality but I'm also for the wear-what-looks-good mentality and the fact of the matter is that bootcut jeans kind of balance out my frame. Tapered jeans would make me look funny and so I dont wear them. I have to admit to having some of my more-flared diesels tapered in a little bit but not to the point that they are straight leg. But that said some people like the big flare and I aint mad at em.

For the record, zathan is really not all that drastic of a bootcut.

edit:^ ^ its been awhile since i've had my zathans, so I forgot exactly how bootlegged they were... maybe im thinking of the Zaf thats fucking big.

Haha, I saw that where a guy had that fucking gigantic diesel collection... you were referencing that thread, right

0% ?? I dunno, some articles have more than others staying power. A good leather jacket, for example, would seem to me to fluxuate between varying levels of coolness.

Main problem with bootcut imo is that it gives weird proportions to the leg, with the bottom lookin "heavy". Also, most bootcut jeans are somewhat loose (but probably with a low rise and tight ass to look "sexy"), which then covers the entire shoe.

If the its a slimmer jean with a slight bootcut to actually fit over a boot (as the wranglers horriblyjolly described) its a whole different deal. Thats a look with a reason.

i think bootcuts look fine as long as they dont awkwardly fall on your shoe/cover way too much of your shoe so you just look like a clown. bad ones, in my opinion, would be those true religion flares or whatever that pretty much eat your shoes

i have a pair of olas and love them, but yeha they take forever to break in. it is a nice slim/bootcut jean without looking ridiculous. similar fit to slim jim up top, except with an half inch-inch bigger opening. olas are quite a bit tighter than rrs, though.

Yeah I wasn't trying to attack you either. Even if it may have sounded like that. I just thought that it was pretty narrow minded to say that all tapered jeans are really skinny. Theres a huge amount of japanese jeans which are cut baggy or regular but still with a tapered leg.

i got my cousin some slim bootcut edwins, found them http://www.rakuten.co.jp/h-pickup/746304/808878/816182/

and they look pretty good. i accidentally got them a little big so they look abit regular not slim, also its a slight not flare cut. i must say i would not wear them but some people can pull them off. also while my cousin isnt a 6 month wash type of guy, the vertical fading on them is awesome.

In all seriousness...who cares if they are cool? Who cares what other people think? If you like them that is all that should matter. If you really like something, you can wear whatever it is and not give a flying fuck what other people think of it.

The zaf is the super huge flared one. That's me who has the huge diesel collection but I didnt pay anywhere NEAR $3000 for it. Since my size is always the one left at sale time I rarely end up paying more than $100 per pair and usually closer to $60-80.

The shoe-eating flare is really only suitable for wear with big ass pointy shoes.

Do the olas stretch out a bit in the thighs? Or if you wear them at your actual waist size are they still skin tight on the upper thigh. I recently moved away from a skintight jean phase and want to never go back. ever.

Yeah, no biggie. You were totally in-line to call out that tapered doesnt = skinny jean.

I'm glad that we could salvage the shitstorm I caused on page 1.

if you wear them bootcut jeans slightly baggier..they wont look like bootcut...unless thats what the look your going for. but who cares really.. you should wear what yo like period.

but at this moment in time they aren't as cool (but still cool) as them tapered or skinnyz. plus, girls look hot in them..they have to wear it tight...w00t w00t (____Y____)

I don't know if they will always be cool but they will always look good. One great thing about being my age is being able to say F*** it as far as cool. I know I'm cool because I know who I am. And who I am loves bootcut ala Ola, Ralf, SDA D1002 and even Zathans if I'm in the right mood.
