My advise go L prime. For the 40D 24 1.4L and 85 1.2L...

That's gonna be my new baby... mmmmmmmmmm. The action on that is so buttery. The guy at B&H was right for trying to stop me from trying that lens out. Now I need it in my life.

I know this isn't about planned camera buys persay, but it probably will lead me to a new camera.

Sony is a bitch about not wanting to repair my camera under warranty ($181 repair fee) when it had the same problem twice in two years, so I am in the market for a new camera. I just need something compact, preferably cheap and durable. I don't want to lug around a big camera to parties or bars....plus I bet a camera fade would be sick!

Anyway, any suggestions? My previous camera was a Sony DSC-W70 (7.3 mp) so somewhere along the same number of megapixels is preferred. Needless to say, NO MORE SONY!

i have a dsc-w70 at home; i'm not very impressed with it, but i haven't had any problems with it (knock on wood). give the canon powershot sd1000 a look. it was mentioned recently in this thread and it's sold at a very reasonable price.

I just got the AlienBee Ringflash and it's pretty awesome. It's still in beta--but Paul Buff is a very kind man. He's updating as he goes along, giving the early adopters free fixes and hardware. For $400 it's unbeatable.

What are you using the Ring flash for? I never quite understood the uses for them. Have you used anyother Alien Bee products? Them seem like amazing quality and very reasonably priced especially in the package deals.

Holy shit you pulled that one outta the archives...

Using it just for play. It was $400... not a bad price. It works as a very powerful off-camera light tool as well if you get an umbrella and stand.

The beta of it wasn't great construction but the output and results were definitely worthwhile for the price.

  • 5 months later...
A 5DmkII and a 35 1.4 when canon decides to get off their lazy asses and fix the stupid autofocus problem

oh, and a 50 1.4 and a new macbook pro

student loans like a mother fucker...

Carl I have two 5Ds and 35 1.4L no focus problems and the 5D mkII probably wont be out until Sept? I doubt I'll be upgrading.

Were you talking about the 1DMkIII because it had some focus issues?

Yea, current 5D's are amazing...but i need the weather sealing and new censor.

The AF issue is what the tech dorks at school told me why canon didnt announce it last month...now i have to wait...lame!

You work so much in the elements you definitely need a 1 series or something sealed. I think the focus problems with the 1DmkIII have been worked out. It has great low light capabilities I had my hands on a 1DsmkII for a couple weeks WHOA SWEET. I think with the new 1Ds mkIII out now you could pick a gently used one for a good price.

I heard from a reliable source (well kinda reliable) that Canon is waiting till fall because of they want to get all the can out of the 1DmkIII, 1DsmkIII and the 40D. Felt if they released it this spring they would be competing with themselves.

Did you see any of the open heart surgical stuff I posted?

I've still not fucked with a fully manual camera yet, all of mine so far have been aperture priority and while I think I understand exposure somewhat I can't really do it myself with my own cameras. I have an older Yashica rangefinder and Nikon SLR right now, fun cameras.

I'll be back to employment soon and I'm wondering what anyone thinks I should get? Maybe one more film camera to learn on or contract the DSLR cancer that is killing superfuture?

There ain't nothing wrong with in-camera metering. It's convenient as fuck. I only use my lightmeter when the situation's gonna throw off the camera.

Anyone have slim camera recommendations? I've been looking at Lumix. The most important thing is that I can carry around with me all the time and take pictures of the weird things I see. Ideally not spending over $300 or 400, because I'll probably be buying a DSLR at some point in the future.

lumix point and shoots are really terrible when it comes to snapshots of people with built in flash. if that's important to you, get a canon sd.

Since my lumix died and I'm getting tired of scanning film, I'm looking into the ricoh gx100. anyone have any experience with it? I heard something new is coming out from ricoh in july/august. I dont' know if i should pull the trigger now, since the price has been dropped at both adorama and popflash or to wait and start paying for scanning since i wont' have access to a scanner in 3 days. advice?
