Silver Jeans

So, I saw a pair of shiny silver Dior jeans last time I was in Harrod's, and thought to myself, "I could do that to a pair of jeans with some spray paint". I went out and bought some H&M Sliq Raws to try it on, but I don't have any idea what to do beyond that. Some research has shown that regular household spray paint will make the jeans too stiff, and will lead to flaking. I found some fabric paint called "Lumiere" that is supposed to be the best metallic fabric paint, but I don't know how to apply it. Do I get some regular brushes and brush it on that way? Or do I buy an airbrush and do it up that way?

Any advice from anyone with experience painting denims, or actually any ideas from anyone, would be greatly appreciated.

i don't have any official experience or knowledge about this but my thought would be to soak the jeans in the dye for a while.

The problem is, it's not a dye. I don't think soaking the jeans in paint would work very well, since ideally it should only adhere to the outside of the denim.

It doesn't come with any instructions?

Cursory Google search reveals that it can be brushed or airbrushed on; 25% water mix required for airbrushing.

I imagine that the color will be denser if brushed on, but more likely to be even if airbrushed. I don't know though, I've not tried it.

Thanks, tangerine. I think I'm gonna go the airbrush route, because I want the texture of the denim to show through. I've never used one before, so I think I'll get one off eBay and rent a compressor or something..unless the brushes themselves can be rented.

Well, I got the paint and decided to get some regular foam brushes to try, since no shops I went to had airbrush kits. I did a test run on a shitty old pair of jeans, and I think brushing is the way to go.

I washed the pair I intend to actually wear, which may have been a mistake. I'll have to press them really well before I paint them.

The paint also works remarkably well on leather, e.g. shoes. I think some cheap shiny gold Chelsea boots are also in my future.

how would you clean those? dry clean i guess? or does the paint not chip off in a wash

To be honest, I hadn't thought that far ahead. The paint says to heat-set it with an iron and then it's washable, but who knows how washable it is.

This H&M denim feels pretty shitty after a wash.

yeah i was thinking that if you put them in a washing machine, you're probably going to be finding little silver flakes on all your clothes for a while

I just finished the first coat, and I gotta say they look pretty terrible. We'll see if the second coat makes them look better. They look circa-2004 trashy.

They're growing on me. Another coat tomorrow, and I think this will have been a good idea.

I'm gonna go for two more I think. They look pretty shiny after two, but you can still see the denim underneath. They're gonna look like aluminum foil when I'm done.

Just finished the second coat. I can't decide if they need another. Right now you can see the denim just barely through the paint in tiny spots. I can't decide what looks better.

the only problem is your going to be finding little flakes all over the place when u dry them or throw them around. Also the paint is going to smear on things so dont sit on any expensive furniture with those.

this reminds me of this trend they had like 6 years ago at my school (a "ghetto" school) where everybody wore these shiny jeans with shiny jackets. when i think about it now, they were all wearing raw denim (they all had warnings against crocking) and i really wish i got into that trend because i'd have some pretty interesting jeans to fade. they came in all kinds of shades, i even remember one had some sort of window pane pattern somehow weaved into it...man...

Just finished heat-setting them with the iron..these things are fucking uncomfortable. I dunno how they'll break in, but shiny and soft "comfort jeans" would be pretty cool.

Anyway, the total was two coats, four (!) jars of paint.

ill be interested to see how they wear. could be very cool. i have to say i liked the way they looked more before you put the extra coats on, but i think having more to begin with will be better in the long run.

It looks interesting but, imo, they're way too silver now. I think they'll look good after a lot of wear, but that begs the question...

exactly what i was thinking, although if the silver do come off after some wear, they might look really dope.
