i just wrote a poem while listening to talking heads...

“10 Years Ago/Later” by Matthew W.

And as I stare across the empty field before my eyes

I turned to my friend and began to ask of whats and whys

The whos and wheres were no longer of any importance

The road behind long and winding, filled with bumps of long misfortunes

And even shorter windfalls, but at the time I thought it was a blast

The party never seemed to end, the play had a neverending cast

Do you remember the night we swam in drink to the shores of tomorrow

Do you remember the days blazed with sun but set fast dimmed with sorrow

Do you remember the promises that seemed to chain and imprison

But were as quickly forgotten once they dropped from our vision

Do you remember the freedom of a gas tank always just above empty

Do you remember the sofas and cigarettes you used to lend me

Do you remember how those packs never seemed to finish

Do you remember candlelit double dates held together by a fire undiminished

Do you remember the hole in the wall scribbled with whispered secrets

Do you remember being handed the keys to life but forgot to keep it

Do you remember the woman we shared, a woman so fine and kind

That she didn’t know it was our first, but knew it was her very last time

Do you remember the rotten apple that went from white to yellow

To brown to green to pieces as shattered and lost as a hitchhiking fellow

Do you remember the anger at the shadows that loomed above

Do you remember turning your back in hate to the only true room of love

Do you remember the words of wisdom that went in one head

Out the other, just as quick as a romance killed with a load shot on the bed

Do you remember the faces becoming backs, one by one by one by all

Do you remember the door knocks answered with only shuts, never calls

Do you remember how tomorrow once seemed like anything

Do you remember how those tomorrows became yesterdays of loathing

Do you remember those games of Russian Roulette, I knew the chamber was empty

But to load it with just one, every now and then life would tempt me

Do you remember the clock closing in on a life of wasted dreams

Do you remember the mouth that used to talk, now stitched with invisible seams

Do you remember the friend you won on a simple two dollar bet

Do you remember the pool of blood in which you last saw them slept

Do you remember the water splashing this way and that, so carefree and inviting

Do you remember the crumpled, tear soaked paper on which they found your writing

Do you remember the boy who never had many friends, but was a friend to every

Do you remember the boy who never got much, but didn’t complain and just let be

I do.
