You guys are good. I have a pair of 1873 cinch backs from Fred Segal in 1999, nice and silky, but not as fun to wear as the semi shiny elesco's I got caught up in from that year. I'm in SF and have lots of Levi's / former Levi's pals who don't know this much data on the stuff. While I have most of the usual new suspects (Seven/PDC/James/AG/True Religion, and I wear none of them ever, I get samples from work stuff, but they're not me). My fave non glam brands are Cimarron ('New Randy' cut) and Cerutti Jeans, seriously. the Cimarrons I can only find in Paris, I think they have some womens' stuff at a few spots in the states. They're not an amazing brand, just a great secret since they look great on me. The denim is seriously good, Italian, lean cut but not like the Wranglers mentioned earlier. The Ceruttis have a better cut than my Dior Homme jeans. My Cerruti's are cut so well, I removed the label, straight guys ask me about them, gay guys complement them, they're not the same old eurotrash look, but the denim is top-dyed, fading every time they go on and the rivets are garbage, they can almost cut you. I have two western bootcut pair by Earl in heavy Japanese denim, I took the flares in, people stop me on the street in those jeans more than any other. The Cerutti / Moncler shop just closed here, so my lo cost denim secret is over. Looking to splurge on some Notify jeans in the next month.

Quote: I have also seen some later redline ugly bartack with the circle R tab that are from the old premium line, of which the name escapes me. it was a run in the late 90's, but not Levi's RED

That was REDLINE, the pre-cursor to RED. I have a pair from that line with the same bartacks, and they also have the red tab with the registered logo only.

That is good info, and it makes sense.

And for those that don't know, 555 on the top button means the jeans were made in the SF factory. Cheers, Joel

Here is some denim porn for you:

1879 Levi repro jacket

Interesting jacket, does it have a buckle back? I'm wondering where Levi's got the pattern - they lost all their stock and archive in the 1912 SF earthquake/fire (their factory was burned to the ground). A couple of years back they paid $35000 for a pair of 1890's jeans which they reproduced as the Nevada jean.

HERE ARE SOME BETTER PICS. I assume if they didn't find an original jacket, they could have found pictures of it or a drawing in old newspaper ads. It must have cost them a fortune to make this jacket, nearly the whole jacket is single stitched on antique machines, notice how close the stitching is together. I love the selvage in the collar and the battery street address. This jacket was stolen from me about 4 months ago and I had to blackmail the excoworker that i assumed stole it to get it back! I have seen an Evisu version of this jacket as well.

Yeah, it is a repro. I wear it every day to work and I make sure I do all my dirty work in it to get the authentic wear. I do wear it with jeans, but I make sure the jeans aren't the same exact color as the jacket. I don't really wear this jacket when I go out yet, I will wait another year or so when it has a lot of character and people will freak out when they see it.

Talking of sturdy and Denime - Denime release their 21oz jeans this month. (to put that in context the regular weight of a pair of 5 pocket jeans is around 13.5-14oz).

thats insane! is there a historical precident for such heavywieght jeans?? did/have levis ever gone above 14oz? my regular pair is 33 501s at 10oz, crazy to think its more than double that, they will last for decades!

I don't know if Levis have gone above 14oz for denim. I very much doubt they have been as high as 21oz.

Denime have been up to 19oz before, and I have a feeling Studio D'Artisan have also gone up as high as 21oz.

A pair of raw 21oz jeans will make some interesting wearing. Already, dry 15oz jeans can almost stand by themselves unaided.
