I loved Brokeback Mountain. One of the best love stories I've seen in ages. Not to mention an incredible score.

Semi-recent films I really, really, really enjoyed: Sin City; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; Thank You for Smoking; Everything is Illuminated; Nightwatch; Brick

out of curiosity why limit yourself to newer ones?

the only one i can recommend is the proposition... the only reason i even watched it was because everyone kept comparing it to peckinpah, who i'm a big fan of. it's not quite, but still pretty good imo. apparently the squid and the whale is pretty good but i haven't seen it.

Yeah, Oldboy is definitely the shit.

out of curiosity why limit yourself to newer ones?

I own hundreds of movies and am fairly well-versed in terms of films. The reason I am asking about newer ones is that unfortunately, I have not been able to keep up with most new releases this year and was wondering if people had any advice, particularly for foreign films/anime/indie films, etc. as they are hard to keep up with without doing some research to find what is out there.

Some other examples of the types of movies I liked this year/am looking for:

- The Proposition

- Shooting Dogs

- Everything Is Illuminated

Basically, films that were not in the public/mainstream eye but were excellent nonetheless. For instance, Grizzly Man/Squid And The Whale were great recommendations. Cheers for the advice anyway. Keep em' coming!!!!!

was brick the movie with the kid from third rock from the sun?

i need to see that. i remember seeing a preview for it back in april.. but forgot when it was coming out, is it out already or has it been out so long it's soon to be on DVD? lol

i just saw DERAILED tonight (rented it).. i actually liked it. anything Clive Owne is pretty good. Crash is good too (i know alot of it was pretty predictable.. but the message behind it was really good (at least i think so)) Garden State.. i seem to be the only one out of my friends that really likes that movie.

what about Big Lebowski? does anyone like that movie?

Nobody Knows - Japanese film (true story) about five kids that were abandoned by their mom and were living in a Tokyo apartment

Battle Royale- Japanese film about a high school class that gets deported to an island and must kill each other to survive (this is a little older I think); also see Battle Royale II

Ken Park - Larry Clark film about kids in suburban California with some fucked up lives; banned in all countries other than HK (last I heard); very Larry Clark; downloaded from Kazaa

'the beat that my heart skipped' - very good french film with duris puling off a wonferfully honest deniro-esque performance. he plays a parisian thug who evicts the poor for slum-lords (one of whom is his father), who then remembers a latent interest in playing the piano, and internal and external conflicts ensue: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411270/

'united 93' - saw this last week, absolutely amazing. filmed in dramatised documentary style, and pretty much in real time. the bare minimum of characterisation places us squarely in the scene (the passengers didn't know each other either), and negates any accusations of melodrama or hollywood sensationalist exploitation. greengrass's shaky-cam directorial style (though tiresome in the bourne supremacy) gives a feeling of stark realism, as do the unkown cast. this is further consolidated with the soundtrack which has all the hub-bub od real life, but got just right so as not to make it hard to hear what the characters are saying, and the musical score which consists of a mere suggestion of sombre classical to imply foreboding. the slow development of the events of that morning are difficult to watch, more-so as greengrass cranks up the tension, to the final dramatic crescendo which is absolutely harrowing. an exceptional peice of work, and in my top 10 of all time for sure: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475276/

'brick' - as mentioned before, a clever little film that drips with style. the noir/chandler/hammett script is very authentic, but you may have to watch it a couple of times as the language used is somewhat archaic. good performances from all concerned, specifacally levitt and haas. it is a little clunky in places, and sometimes the script does jar a bit with the so-cal high school setting, but the fact that johnson edited this in his bedroom is amazing. i'd probably give the film 7/10, but definitely 9/10 for effort - an interesting and enjoyable little oddity: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393109/

'survive style 5 +' - japanese hyper weirdness, following five 'wacky' plotlines as they slowly interconnect with each other. brilliant saturated cinematography and dynamic direction. if you like japanese weirdness i'm sure you'll like this but i maybe have to watch it again before i pass proper judgement (have i mentioned it's really really weird?): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430651/

'9 songs' - directed by the versatile brit michael winterbottom, this film is (in)famous for being the most sexually explicit film ever passed by the bbfc (brit censors) we follow a relationship betwen two (imo) fairly unpleasant protagonists, an american student and a british scientist, as they go to gigs.......and have sex. and they really have sex, with the money shot and all, and they really go to gigs, with those bits of the film basically someone filming a gig from the crowd (dandy warhols, primal scream etc etc). this film is dull, but an interesting work as it is not imo pornography (as tittilating as paving slabs) but is about as explicit as you can go (no anal i suppose). guarunteed to be a converstion point with whoever you watch it with: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411705/

'the station agent' - one of my favourite american films of recent years. a reticent man with a interest in trains moves to a deserted and disused trasin station in new jersey, he is also a small person (dwarf? midget? i forget the proper term). here he meets an infectiosly cheerful coffee/ice crem van man, and an emotionally damaged middle aged woman. that's about it, but the gentle pacing and subtle performances of this film are exquisite. if you like films that don't shout about anything, and are steeped in introverted melancholy (a bit lke jarmusch) then you should love this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340377/

'in my fathers den' - simmilar in tone to 'the station agent', only more sinister, and the story reminded me a little of 'the beat that my heart skipped', only less french. This film from new zealand follows a feted war photo-journalist who return to his small rural town after the death of his father, and as he takes a job teaching and befriends a female student, we learn something of his family life and reasons for leaving. this film is fairly intense and haunting, the two main performances of barclay and mcfadyen are excellent, and the plot, though maybe a little cryptic, reveals itself bit by bit, suggesting as it goes possibilities of deperession, suicide, incest, abuse and paedophilia: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385017/

the guy you're talking about was in GQ a couple months ago and they said he's a really good up and coming actor despite the fact that he's a dwarf/midget.

i like all the descriptions to these movies.. but where can i get my hands on them without having to order/rent them through the net?
