Caught a flight from Changi to Pudong and rode the maglev to Shanghai proper. Maxed out at 431 km/h (268 mph), shame it's a demo line and only goes about 30 km. Waved to Haibao on the way.

View from our room at a hotel near Yuyuan Gardens. So much construction going on in Shanghai constantly. Looks out over the old city and part of a faux-Ming dynasty complex.

xpost from ROYxCone thread:

Since gardening can be pretty competitive in San Francisco, the ROYs and I checked out one of our rival's gardens today:

5731701777_21461378ba_z.jpg

Then I saw one of their work trucks around the corner:

5732248596_b919c8ce9d_z.jpg

And some of their workers on a job site:

5731701981_426b46dfc7_o.jpg

Their supervisor was a real hard-ass. He was yelling at them the whole time I was there, and I actually saw him smack a few on the ass when they weren't moving fast enough:

\5731702365_910dc18eea_z.jpg

They were a pretty industrious crew. Their weed-eradication skills were phenomenal:

5731702685_6ab046895c_z.jpg

But on the bright side, their pruning skills were fairly rudimentary:

You call that a topiary?

Cruising the back streets of Shanghai, around the French Concession. The architecture and the tree-lined streets were really beautiful. Too bad about the air quality...

Some cool shops though.

img4780e.jpg

Local sneakers.

img4213l.jpg

Eblis is a local streetwear brand. Had some aight stuff (no kop).

img4220o.jpg

Roger had a lot of imported Japanese brands.

img4221xs.jpg

S2VS had some interesting gear.

img4214lf.jpg

Aegis had some good brands; BoO, CP, etc... Dudes that ran it were not local though.

img4779j.jpg

Sideways was pretty wacky. Lots of Japanese and American brands, but the prices meant that everything had to be counterfeit.

img4602ru.jpg

img4599o.jpg

Dressed up sex shop storefront. The style of the display was so incongruous with the merch.

img4210v.jpg

Lil bit of graff. Didn't see too much of it in Shanghai actually.

The Bund is beautiful at night. A whole stretch of old sandstone buildings illuminated from below.

img4223x.jpg

Had a really big dark ale at the Shanghai brewery. Was surprisingly tasty.

img4228e.jpg

img4229e.jpg

This was pretty late, after many, many drinks, which means the only place open was this. You don't want to see the dumplings they served me. I ate two and left.

img4352b.jpg

I lost count of how many Lacoste impersonators there are on Nanjing Rd. Some are just ridiculous. Clio Coddle? What the fuck is that?

The centre of the whole temple complex is Mahavira hall, constructed entirely from Myanmar Teak, and supported by 46 Teak trunk columns.

img4249i.jpg

img4250el.jpg

And inside the hall was a big Buddha. Not the biggest Buddha I've seen, but it is almost 9 metres tall and constructed entirely from 15 tons of silver.

at first we need to fill in a small layer of concrete so that the "balls" which are attached to the underarmor won`t float/come up and bring up all the armor-construction underneath it. the 2nd layer of concrete will get filled in after the first layer is almost dry so that the floating won`t happen but that the 1st and 2nd layer still going to connect.

Here in Vechta is an old fortress from the 17th century. Nearby is the city park. So today I visited the so called “Zitadelle”. It was built after a French and a Dutch pattern. The walls of such a fortress in the 17th century weren’t longer build out of stone. They are just thick earth walls.

The Zitadelle as you can see it here is just a small sample they have rebuilded as the original was totally destroyed

And there’s a museum. The “Zeughaus”. That building is from 1698

I didn’t had the time to go inside but I took pics of what was displayed around the building.

(x post from rxc)

Hadn't had one of my lunchtime rambles with my mate Carl for some weeks so…

We headed by the river.

1.jpg

this stretch is just down from Greemwich. We've lost a huge local scrapyard, redeveloped as swanky riverside apartments, but there's still a great, industiral feel, helped by the presence of the last boat repair yards on this part of the river. Occasionally you'll see three or four mast sailing boats in there. Mostly they are working on the barges that ply their trade up and down the river, usually carryig hardcore or rubble from building work.

2crane.jpg

3junk.jpg

This wharf was the site of the first telegraph cable company - they made the cable that first connected Britain to the states. Now developers have just got planning permission to convert the wharf into a terminal for luxury cruise liners.

4wharf.jpg

5machinery.jpg

According to legend, all the swans on the River Thames are owned by the Queen. Wonder if this couple know?

6swans.jpg

This thames walk is supposed to stay open by law - stretches keep getting closed, eventually they reopen, like this one:
