Who makes good furniture?

Like the subject says. I just moved into my first apartment and don't know anything about furniture. I wan't quality stuff, not particle-board Ikea crap. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. Any good furniture places around here?

I wouldn't plunk down any $$$ on stuff I didn't know too much about though. I'd investigate some designers and see who you like and what era of furniture you like as well.

If you're willing to go mail order, I'd check out the following sites:

They have carry Zanotta, Moroso, and Cappellini if you like Italian. If you want cheaper, wood products, they carry Bensen (www.bensen.ca)... which, if you're looking for walnut or oak, is a very reasonable manufacturer.

If you want just about everything else for cheap, they carry everything, and if they don't, they can get it for you. Their SRP will beat US SRP... it comes down to freight charges - whether or not you can order enough to offset them.

If you want quality replicas of the classics (Corbusier, van der Rohe, Eames) rather than paying what DWR and others charge for the Barcelona, petit confort, etc.
