definitely going to have to second everything Yardsale says, once you get some momentum it's sort of terrifying how quickly you get new followers, and how big milestones (another 1,000 followers or something) gets farther away.

find a topic (or an idea or *something*) you are passionate about

post often (not too often, more regularly) about it

be consistent, don't over post or under post or you'll see major fluctuations

as you post more and do stuff you'll get more attention and once that happens you just get more people.

I really don't know if i want to stay on tumblr anymore.

It doesn't discourage original content but it makes it too damn easy to not have any. My tumblr isn't even a blog, it's hardly personal, and the whole dashboard format makes visiting each tumblr sort of useless, so design is not a factor.

I think i will just start a blogspot soon, that sounds good.

i agree with what you said about the dashboard making design/themes pointless, but you could say the same thing about regular blogs now that there's google reader and other RSS feeds. if the content is intriguing enough, the reader will probably click through to the blog.

thats twisted. do you have to turn off notifications to be able to see your dashboard at all? or do you even use the dashboard.

tumblr actually short circuits posts with tons of notes, so it's not actually that bad when you get a ton of notes ... i'm basically at twice as many followers as yardsale.
