"I really don't want a lot of people wearing my clothes."

I was reading this article on A Bathing Ape were:

Nigo also decrees that customers may buy only one piece of any product, and it must be in their size.

He said, "It's to help prevent people from selling the clothes on the black market. I really don't want a lot of people wearing my clothes."

I wonder how long ago he said that. Is A Bathing Ape getting out of hand? I mean, I see Dorks, Gangstas, Bottie' Boys ( no offense ), and corporate people tryin to rock anything that has a milo or ape logo on it. Why can't shit ever stay exclusive? Don't get me wrong, I still like Bape shit and have quite a few notches in my closet, but this is starting to remind me of how they killed Polo in the late 90's when it was cool to rock Snow beach jackets and RL2000 boots.

Just sparkin' convo, getting opinions on the matter...

God bless that guy. I mean, I would never spend the kind of money that he wants on the kind of stuff that he makes. But I'm glad that he does it - and I'm mad impressed that a little Japanese man that makes candy-colored AF1 knock-offs and shirts with baby cartoon characters can not only sell his wares like crack but also get people like Pharrell and Nelly to wear all his shit. I mean, he took hip-hop style, flipped it around, marked it up 100 times, and is now selling it back. Kids wait for hours to buy a screen-printed t-shirt! The dudes working at the NYC store front like they're manning the Hermes boutique in Monaco. And for all intensive purposes, they might as well be.

Love him or hate him, what he's accomplished is amazing. And almost any clothing company would kill to be in his shoes.

Hats off to NIGO!

holy fuck..just saw the pics from freshnessmag...wow.

you'd think God was opening a store and handing out free blessings or something...that's one fucking long ass lineup...

and the whole 'one item per customer in their size only' thing...i'd be PISSED if i finally got to the store and they didn't have anything i liked..or anything left in my size...

It's true, but BAPE is in a class all its own. Given the materials cost, his markup and final retail is INSANE! And it's painfully obvious where that money is going - straight into his gold fronts and diamond-encrusted Rolls Royce ornaments. It sure as hell didn't cost him 75 bucks to sew and screen print a t-shirt.

People buy his clothes - with the crazy prices, lines around the block, only 1 per customer rules - solely due to his marketing. He is the absolute master of creating a sense of scarcity. When you drop 1000 bucks for a hoodie, it's all for the name. Sure, the graphics are cool and the cotton is nice. But is the quality really that much different from your usual kit - like Zoo York or Stussy? I mean, even given the dopest graphics on Earth and the softest cotton you ever felt - would you drop 1G on an Abercrombie sweatshirt? Hell no.

But the mystique, image, and exclusivity of BAPE not only provides that extra value, but makes goes beyond and people starve for it. And this works all over the world - not only in consumer-insane Asia. I'd love to lock that dude in a room and pick his brain for 72 straight hours. He's really a genius. I also wouldn't mind owning his home in Tokyo - if he ever decides to just give it to me.

He is like the Puff Daddy of the fashion industry. If that is your style go for it. I wouldn't waste money on it though.

Yeah, he's definitely #2! I just find it rather depressing when I used to rock his shit way back and people were like A BATHING APE, whats that? Now me and my girl went in the store last weekend and we saw people who obviously did not and let me repeat DID NOT belong in that store! Even the guards look like nigga's just slapped a pair of Bape shit on them to blend in and there shit looks all wrong too! Shit should of been all japanese workers straight from Japan or some shit like that, the staff there looks tired. My girl said when she saw that, it was time for me to say bye bye to Bape. Now I feel like I can't rock all that Marvel comic shit...

Good call! I like that WSU's site explaination...

"Another example of the oral transformation of language by people who don’t read much"

Damn, that's been my problem all along! Thanks for the tip. It's funny that this board has more bitchy call-outs on bad grammar than anywhere else that I've ever seen, but I appreciate it. Better that than "Yea OMG u right bro, LOL that shit iz kewl."

i think he should double or triple the prices.

imagine that. people would freak and the kids would want the stuff even more.

and less people would be able to afford it, therefore less people would be wearing it, and he'd be happy in the end.
