I need a TV

i bought a 42" sharp lcd about 3 months ago and i'm extremely satisfied with it. i did quite a bit of research before buying and the quality from the tv was much better than the competition (sony and samsung). only downside is that i don't have a vga input so i had to buy a converter to plug my computer. the great thing about a tv this size is that you can use you use it as a computer monitor and it's so awesome. the newer sharp models are also mad thin.

and about the plasma burn-in thing, i don't care what most companies say, if you use it a lot as a computer screen, IT WILL BURN IN.

i think you're wrong.

burn-in is preventable.

this is a rather broad blanket statement.

to clarify, if you use a plasma exclusively as a computer screen and leave it on for hours every day, you may experience burn in. However, if use it as a computer screen for a few hours, then switch to tv/dvd/etc. you will not have any problems.

Just get something you can trust at a good price, only geeks in controlled environments will care about the difference between a nice samsung, sharp or sony. For the record I got a samsung lcd (cuz of the computer thing) and am fully satisfied with it. I like their zero defect warranty... Mine is 1080p but I guess 720p should be fine for the use you're planning.

I have a Samsung also, but recently my neighbor across the street had bought his LCD tv from the pawn shop for 600 bucks. Its a Sony 42 inch LCD with 1080P output. So its pretty good for 600, what I'm trying to say is. Start lookin' at the pawnshop, you can possibly find the tv of your dreams for a whole lot less.

new Pioneer plasma KURO. best blacks. best picture. smart color colibration. 2 million pixels (5010FD, all new elite line) best TV money can buy. well B&O can rival it but for alot more money

True, however way out of the OP's price range.

What's the best 50"+ Plasma for <$2000?

Either Samsung or Panasonic.

Panasonic manufactures it's own panels in-house whereas Samsung is supplied from another company (not sure which).

Go to the store and compare. Be advised that Best Buy, Circuit City, etc do not calibrate their tv's so it is very hard to compare. I would recommend going to a store like Magnolia where the salespeople are slightly more educated and the panels are more likely to be calibrated.

as far as tvs go, you dont really wanna fuck with plasma when you could have LCD for the same price

with that being said, in my time around HDtvs, i find that sony bravias are among the best in terms of picture quality/brightness/etc. Following sony, i would say that SHarp knows exactly what theyre doing. The sharp aquaos' is one of the best tvs out

i dont know what the general concensus on this board is for vizio, but they are the leading tv manufacturer in terms of sales and Sony isnt too pleased. They make nice quality tvs and i havent had any complaints with my unit, granted it needed a good tuning out of the box

its a 42'' 1080p LCD and i got it for $999 when it first came out

Why? Plasma has better blacks, response time, color reproduction and is cheaper than LCD in its size. This statement makes no sense.

Anyway, artificialsky, why are you set on lcd or plasma? Is it because you want to hang on the wall? A compromise would be a Sony SXRD rear projection. It has fast response time, blacks that rival plasma, no burn in worries, and is much cheaper than any flat panel in it's performance range.

all those reasons you listed are almost obsolete with some of the newer LCDS coming out. Blacks are being improved and prices are becoming lower and lower: to a point where the size to price ratio is discernible when compared to plasma

the image from an HD cable box into a plasma vs. lcd is pretty noticable, especially on non-hd channels, plasmas picture looks terrible due to the grainy nature of plasmas whereas the LCD makes images look smoother....kinda hard for me to explain being as im not much of a tv guy

but i will admit that lcd isnt able to produce some of the vivid colors that plsmas are able to produce, but in less than a year, i bet that point will be obsolete
