What makes jeans overhyped and overrated (start with True Religion?)

I have a question/comment about when something becomes over rated or over hyped. There's a huge difference between the two! Music is more important to me than jeans (wrong board I know!) but the logic is the same. You can go into any major record store on earth and find labels promoting bands that are basically knocking off musical trends from a couple of years ago. Pop music is largely based on over rating, right!?

On the other hand, you might live in a city with a great band that people outside of your city no nothing about. They may get hyped to the point that MTV loves the shit out of them, but they still may be a great band.

To me, over rated is inferior merchandise (music, jeans, whatever) being passed as quality (for the money,) which it never is. Over hyped, may also be over rated, but can't it also be popular because of it's quality?

btw... I'm not trading in my iPod for an iRiver anytime soon!
