Nice Suit for medical school interviews... in a 34 chest?

Weird, most of the females I saw were quite well dressed. The really poorly dressed were some guys, who were very clearly wearing Dad's old suit from years back that was 3 inches too big all over.

Although, I'm in Canada, don't know if that makes a difference....

In any case, obviously its not THAT big a deal what suit you wear (they won't automatically discount you for wearing that silver suit) but why would you bother taking such an unecessary risk? You've obviously invested alot in this if you've gotten this far, you might as well make damn sure that if your interview doesn't go GREAT, its not because of a subconscious opinion an interviewer made due to your suit being too flashy.

btw-Herpsky, what school are you at? PM if you don't want to scream it out

WOW, you're in MedSchool in CANADA! My respect for you is over the top now. Sooooooooo envious haha.

i was looking for a suit... went to galleria in houston and everything was too big. Brooks Bros. told me they can make custom suits, but at the price of $600.

Anyone here can comment of Brooks Brothers' quality? Thanks.

let's put it this way, Brooks Brothers have been around for a long time and have a fairly solid reputation for menswear if I am not mistaken. buying from them without any sales or discounts is not inexpensive, the question is whether or not the garments will hold their value overtime (they tend to sell for nickels on the dollar on ebay, as a reference). If you are still in a phase of buying new stuff every few weeks or months and not wearing anything you bought 6 months ago, I would try to spend a little less than $600 for a new suit because your tastes may change in the near future. Also brooks is very traditional so if you go there asking for a super slim jacket or a jacket that does not entirely cover your ass in the back (as it's supposed to do) the tailor may look at you all funny and give you a hard time, or alternatively you may be pressured into getting a suit that while may be traditional and looks good to the general public, not entirely your style and thus money down the drain.

If there is one thing you can do, it's to try on their suit jackets in various sizes and see how you like them, if you think the stuff off the racks need much more tailoring to get to how you like it, I would probably go somewhere else.

I interviewed at 11 medical schools (i know thats a shit load).

Most interviewers wear DARK SUITS i.e. navy or black. I can't stress this enough.

You don't really wanna stand out from the rest. You must be as conservative as possible, IMO. Dark suits with pin stripes is the furthest you wanna go.

No crazy tie with Homer Simpson all over print.

No gay-ass square toes.

No red shirt.

Most interviewers wore BLUE or WHITE shirts.

People in the know about formal attire would never recommend black suits for interviews, and definitely not for one's first suit. See this thread for better options:

I look like a god damned idiot in those kids suits though. Are you sure this is better idea than a MTM Thick as thieves?

Kids suits are NOT the same as men's suits. Do not buy a youth size suit (size 18). Wear a nice suit to a med school interview. Fucking spend the extra money and give yourself whatever tiny edge you can. MTM is (IMO) the only way to go with a size 34 frame. I have several 36s that I've had altered and its always awkward on my frame (ie. too much fabric in the chest, weird proportions...) Its not like its the only time in your life you're going to need a nice suit either.
