Not a cafe, but if you like Japanese, Ramen Kan in Haymarket. On the corner opposite Market City and the Monorail station area, 1st floor.

Reasonably priced, great ramen and udon, cha han etc....its always busy though so pick your time well. Nice decor.

Best Japanese yakiniku is at Rengaya in North Sydney. Expect to pay around $50 each for dinner.

Japanese is mostly what I eat these days. Gotta love their wagyu. :)

Best breakfast/brunch: Cafe Sofia (Erskineville) for cheap fry-ups and smoothies or Bills (Darlinghurst) for more expensive and more of a wait - the ricotta hotcakes are gold.

Best coffee: Without a doubt, it has to be Campos (Newtown) - insanely good.

Best affordable restaurant: heaps to chose from, but check out Sumalee Thai (Newtown) - it is downstairs at a pub, in a big outdoor setting. Big dishes that are meant for sharing, so it is great for a group outing - try the chicken, chilli jam and cashew stir-fry.

Best restaurant: Icebergs (Bondi) has fantastic food and arguably the best view you can find. Fairly pricey if you are on AUS$ but much more reasonable if you are on £'s. Everything about the restaurant excels - food, wine, service, view. Cafe Sydney (Circular Quay) is also excellent for both food and view.

Bars: check out Hugo's Lounge (Kings Cross) or Wildfire (Circular Quay) for something (s)wanky, Mars Lounge (Surry Hills) for somewhere quite cool, or for a more club-type experience The Greenwood (North Sydney) is great - but only for the Sunday day-party. The Slip Inn (Darling Harbour) used to be good 'underground' club with DJs on Fri/Sat but I'm not sure if it is still going.

Overall some restaurants are great, but it is the cafe/coffee culture that is really amazing. Unfortunately there isn't much in the way of pubs or good casual drinking places - but there is a huge amount of cocktail bars and nightclubs.
