tea anyone?

For brewing single cups of tea, I steep the loose tea with water in a measuring cup and then simply strain it into my mug/cup. Pretty simple, although there is generally some fine sediment that ends up at the bottom. I don't mind, however.

I love tea, it mixes well with my love for dim sum... when I go out to drink tea it's usually for breakfast and I go to a yum cha place.. someday when I host people I'd probably serve up teas with Japanese "baked goods" like mochi and such.

Oh well since this is superfuture I offer up what paraphernalia I've been using for my loose-leaf tea addiction:

20 bucks per... it makes an excellent gift. Not to mention it makes you look like a total tea snob when stirring.

Usually though I just frickin dump the tea leaves into my cup. I love eating my teas or using left-over used looseleaf in my cooking (tea-eggs anyone?). Just have to make sure to brush your teeth once finished.

There's some awesome wikipedia tea articles I found super-interesting in terms of eating teas and just plain strange yet yummy tea-uses:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Chinese_tea

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Tea_varieties

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pu-erh << I really wanna try eating this tea

and a non-wiki link to a thread about eating tea leaves: http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?t=601

  • 3 months later...

I tried this "slimming" strawberry pu-erh from a well-known tea shop a few days ago and it was the most foul thing I have ever tasted in my life. It tasted like burnt rubber.

I guess the slimming part is true since I was too sick to eat anything.

Do u think tea has an effect on your appetite .. is the obesity rate in the UK much lower than in the US where people down more coffee and soda '??/

I think any continuous consumption (throughout the day) of 'healthy' (i.e. non-sugar filled) liquids is going to curb your appetite to some extent, as most people often confuse thirst with hunger, but I'll be damned if the UK & Ireland don't have as many obese people per capita as the US. You can drink all the tea in the world and it won't matter in the slightest if your diet consists of battered sausages, chips, and beer.

They do say that green tea, however, aids in metabolism, but its not going to keep you slim on its own...........that's for damn sure.

awesome! what school?

well i've got the choice of taking lessons at doshisha university, or through a private tea ceremony school near campus. most likely, i'll start out with the university classes to get a feel for the art before enrolling into the private lessons.

this is a really great thread by the way, really informative.

^^^ that's really dope. where can i get one?

it's made by bodum... same people that made my french press. i ordered mine, but places like bed bath & beyond and crate and barrel carry their stuff. it's pretty awesome, but i wish the plastic was a bit thicker. in the meantime, mint tea every morning is great.

`Missed this thread ... posted when I was in Thailand.

I'm a devout tea drinker - Yerba daily in all forms for it's vitamin and mineral content, energetic and appetite suppressing qualities, and sometimes mixed with fruit juice too if I'm working ... safflower for the blood cleansing properties ... green tea and rice for a treat ... white tea for a change ... and I've been known to make a wild redbush chai using cinnamon, cloves, green cardomom, nutmeg, ginger, honey and condensed milk. Hashish too, if the company is right ...

DUDE... sorry for replying late but "The flavor of Pu-erh has been described as muddy, earthy, and tannic, with strong overtones of the barnyard"... now someone mixed that with strawbery??? I think you and the shop got a badly made batch or forgery of tea... or it just isn't your flavor (I admit, I still need to try this tea myself and am nervous about it's flavor).

Anything that's famous and expensive yet in high demand in china will surely also have many accompanying forgeries. It's a hard tea to produce well... so I maybe you got some really nasty poo-erh. At least I hope it was cheap. Best way to determine this is if you watch the leaves in the tea-brick/cake unfurl as it is steeped... it shouldnt crumble. (I read this from the wiki)

oh and to mlproject:

this thing is the shit. best $20 i've spent all year.

JUST EAT THE LEAVES ^_^

and finally :

Chai, Crysthanthemum, Jasmine. Those are my favorites. I usually choose teas on which one smells the best though *shrug*, it's really the best part of tea.

Sometimes in the winter I like to smell the empty can of tea while drinking hot water. It's a ghetto thing I used to do when I didn't feel like going out to chinatown to refill...
