On messenger bags

Or any kind of shoulder bag, really. I bought one at an army/navy surplus store a couple of months ago, and the strap is starting to degrade. It looks like this:

It wasn't the greatest bag, but I was desperate!

Anyway, I'm now looking for a new bag. Large enough for books/laptops/whatever, but pretty. Suggestions would be appreciated!

Chrome also makes great bags, for the more fashion conscious among us.

For the active messenger bag I would not go with anything but re:load

http://reloadbags.com/

Custom designed bags, no shoddy hardware (HATE, HATE chrome buckles), one of a kind.

If it was a work bag I would go with PAC myself.

As for Chrome, I wouldn't go so far as to say that the hardware is shoddy, niether I nor those I know with Chrome bags have had a buckle failure. That being said, niether I nor my friends are active messengers (well, one exception...), so take it with a grain of salt.

I haven't worn a re:load so I can't really comment, though I have heard that they are quite nice. Chrome, however, makes a damned comfortable bag.

to be fair these (bike)messenger bags are not great for regular around town hanging off the shoulder use. the way most reload/chrome/pac/undertheweather/bailey works bags are made to be worn (way high up on your back) is not ideal for walking around.

I'll take umbrage to the quality issue of Chrome...they offer a lifetime warranty on their bags. If anything goes wrong due to construction, they'll replace it. I don't know where you get the shoddy hardware info, but it's dead wrong. My bag can survive a war.

Lifetime warranty or not I've seen my share of busted buckles. You still have to send it back and wait for a new one. While it makes it easier to take off a full bag it's just one more thing to break.
