Digital SLRs?

I've heard that d90 is supposed to drop this week (http://www.photographybay.com/2008/04/21/nikon-d90-d3x-rumors/).

It's also supposed to have a uVR system that works with all nikkor lenses and gives a 10 stop advantage :) (http://yourphotoarchive.com/laugh.htm).

i love how there are entire websites dedicated to rumors about this camera, complete with fake pics of photochopped D3s. they should do that shit for supreme.

Sounds good, but you might as well go for the D300. Price difference isn't that much

Well the only reason why I would upgrade is cuz I have a friend who has a D200 who would trade me the D200 for my D80 + $200. If i had the same kinda access to a D300, of course i'd go for a D300.

and price difference isnt that much? d200 and d300 price jumps from like 1000 to 1700...i'd say its a pretty significant price difference

I dont know about the jump from a d80 to D200, but from a XTi to a 30/40D, theres not much improvment in Image quaity, the money goes into other places, better AF, build, 3200iso, more FPS etc. But from what I read the D200 is a great camera, I'd do the trade if I were you.

By the way, for anyone whos interested, Firefox 3 is colour managed, so if you're having colour problems when you upload images on the web, you can enable it by doing this:

By default, color management is disabled in Firefox 3. To enable it, just enter about:config in the address bar, promise to be careful to the popping window and type “color_management” in the filter. Change gfx.color_management.enabled to true. This means that Firefox will honor the profiles embedded to the images it displays.

canon 30d with battery grip for 720 worth it?

thanks

That's a fairly normal price at the moment, and I would say it's worth it because the 30D is a great camera. When I bought mine it was going for 600-650 and now it's down to 550-600, while those battery grips go for around 120.

If the 30D is what you want, go for it.

guys, please help me choose... I want to make a wise decision before I kop my 1st dslr.

I have narrowed my choices down to a nikon d40, bought new in store for around $500.. I know I can find better deals, but almost all of the bargains are to be found in the US. after shipping to Italy and such it amounts to a not-so-bargainous price, so I prefer to get it here directly, new, with the warranty.

NOW, I also have the option of getting a rebel XT for $450 used. this sounds like a good price and I am willing to overlook the warranty factor for this price...

thoughts? which one should I get?

jj, keep in mind that you need motorized version (i don't know how to say it in english, perhaps i'm writing it right) of the lens. Which means you'll only have manual focus available on a lot of lenses, which really sucks.

Imo the $450 xt is a nice deal, and if you can bargain a bit, that'd be an even better deal.

the_state, yes you get moar zoooom. but, on a same price range, a 18-55 lens is supposedly better than a 18-135. and also the focal between 55 and 135 are really less usefull than the previous ones.

so it sounds like you're saying that for $175 more, the 18-135 ain't worth it.

yeah, I've heard that the d40 limits the lens-buying capabilities. does this mean there are ONLY less options available for the d40 or are they out there, but more expensive than a non-motorized lens?

so you're recommending I get the XT?

go with the Nikon d40. the d40 is probably one of the best cameras out for beginners.

super n00b question:

18-55mm kit lens vs 18-135mm kit lens = i get more zoom w/ the 18-135?

im guessing you're talking about the 18-55 VR.

in that case, the 18-135 is a MUCH MUCH better lens. the only reason the 18-55 has any competition with the 18-135 is due to the VR, quality in glass, the 18-135 is very nice and crisp. both are kit lens's for D80's but the kit with the 18-135 goes for roughly 200-300 more. Def go with the 18-135.

*just to clarify, from what i know, the 18-55VR uses the same glass as the ever-so-shitty 18-55 kit lens thats like $80 brand new but has VR in it...and in any case VR really isnt that useful unless you're zoomed in alot...ie lens's like 18-200

another noob question: Will a ef-s 18-55mm f 3.5-5.6 lens work on a nikon d40/d60?

what...? isnt ef-s a Canon thing...? so...no a Canon lens will not work on a Nikon camera

the only downside to the D40 is that the body itself does not have a autofocus drive init...which really isnt a problem seeing as how most lens's you will get these days have AF on it.

edit: fnd answered it before me and in a better way :D

Still the XT is worth it, but if you want to go for Nikon jj, they also make good cameras indeed.

A canon-nikon debate wouldn't have helped you ! Both are great, both have their drawback, and also both have an impressive lens range. You won't be disappointed, with any dslr you take anyway. I hope you'll enjoy ;)

There are limitations to the lens you put on the d40, but you have to wonder whether that will be an issue you will ever come across.

A beginner SLR with the stats of a d40 should last you a while, regardless of the lens limitations.

Of course, it would be best to err on the side of caution to get what you want and what you would enjoy.

$450 for an XT is not bad, but it is far from good. $450 shipped to Italy may be ok, but I have seen them go for much less. And the lesser of the XSi series should be coming out, and hence further dropping the price of the XTi. There are a number of US retailers already offering the XTi with lens kit for under $600.

I would also second what ercdw said. I found the Canon to be uncomfortable. I have since sold my d40 and have not found an alternative just yet, but comfort is key if you plan on doing a lot of shooting.

What he said. Wait for Canon XS to drop and cop the XTi or just wait until it gets to low 500s. And try it out in a store or with a friend's. XTi should be fine unless you have big hands. Either way, I really don't think you can make a bad decision with DSLRs at this point.

GIDDYUP! my new d40 is in my claws at last :)

and it was a total score, I found the last one they had at the supermarket I usually go to (with an electronics department) and since I had a bunch of points saved up, I was able to use them and get it for 260 euros!!

I wanted to start taking photos as soon as I got home but I have to charge the battery, this photo was taken with the bf's camera.

thanks everyone for all your help, I'm so happy with it :D:D:D

So I'm waiting for delivery on my Canon XSi w/ EF 18-55mm kit lens. For the more seasoned photography ppl, what other lens do you think should be part of a staple for everyday shooting? (noob question) :)

Anyone have experience with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L?

Looking at buying one within a month or two...

You honestly can't go wrong with this lens. I've shot indoor basketball games with mine and it's fast enough so that I don't have to shoot at such an extremely high ISO and suffice with good pictures with no noise.

Everyday, walking around shooting? Try the Canon 24-70 F/2.8L. If you want more range but sacrifice your speed, 24-105 F/4 L would be great.

For me Canon 10-22 or the Sigma and Tokina alternatives but another favourite is the Canon 50 1.8 (around 90~aud) it's a must have even if you only use it a couple of times here and there. But if you can splurge then a Canon 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 lineup would do you just fine ;)

The Tamron 17-50 2.8/Sigma 18-50 2.8/Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 are great alternatives if you don't have the money for a L lens.

Congrat on the dslr jj, 260€ is hell of a bargain !!
