formal masquerade ball... suggestions?

So it looks like I'll be attending my first psuedo formal in my adult life next month. Tuxedos are optional, but given the venue, I'm guessing most people will lean towards a black-tie getup. It's not an especially conservative crowd, so I have some flexibility - plus it's masquerade. I think some of the evening-wear looks in DH F/W 06 are good inspiration... but that's just a starting point I guess. Thoughts on how to do this stylishly?

You might want to check the Viktor + Rolf for H&M collection. It drops in early November and would be perfect for your first formal... very cheap too!

Seconding on a Viktor & Rolf H+M mixup. Seems quite well suited to what you're looking for, and wearable post-party too...

I think I remember someone on these boards saying they worked at H+M?? the nearest one to me is about.... 8000 miles, and I want some of that Viktor & Rolf in my life too..

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! The viktor&rolf H&M sounds perfect but is gonna drop just a few days too late.

Probably will stick with a nice paper-mache Venetian mask but that MF Doom one would be sick!
