Questions about selvedge

I have been reading a lot of stuff about selvedge, and I still dont fully understand what it is...

Is it an extra piece of thread sewn in to make the seam stronger?

What is open seam?

Can someone post a pic of a selvedge and maybe a little explanation of what it truly means cuz Im confused...

a good place to start would be the sticky at the top of this thread titled "Denim Encyclopedia". It will have all the things you ever want to know about selvedge or pretty much anything else dealing with jean construction. have fun.
