Power Pop saved my life (and marriage)!

Just made a mix with nothing less then a collection of:

The Toms, The dB's, The Boyfriends, Let's Active, The Pernice Brothers, The Raspberries, The Smirks, Orange Peels, Lilys, and Holiday...just to name a few.

i really can't find the lily's power pop, orange peels, yes, but for some reason, i always hold the lilys in the shoegaze category.

when I think of Powerpop I think of what used to be called "punk" a la Buzzcocks, Undertones, Vibrators.....or in today's music my nigs The Adored

When I think of power pop, I think of Big Star and Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" -- that's pretty much it. I'm lacking in this genre.

yeah, i feel like power pop is such a broad category. It spans so many years and what is and isn't power pop is completely up to the listener. , everyone major rock band has a "pop" album. ie. i'd consider weezer as power pop but some people think that's emo, others just say that's rock, and what you listed the lily's as power pop, i've not really listened to their later stuff but in the presence of nothing is one of the defining shoegaze records of the nineties, and thus the pigeonhole of shoegaze for the lily's for me. but yeah, even loveless could i guess be considered "power pop" too as every fucking song on it is a pop song, and the guitars are very powerful.

i think of the Cars and Weezer...and seems like the term 'power pop' is more used just to describe a sound rather than used to refer to a scene or genre

Yeah, good point. Its certainly not a "sub genre". It spans a large amount of music.

I think the greatest band of all-time is Butthole Surfers. Then again, I think they were more along the lines of "extremely intelligent indie-rock." I heard Yo-Yo Ma actually learned cello from the lead singer.........
