FYI : Premium Denim Article

The Jul/Aug 2006 issue of 'Sportswear International' has a spread on the state of premium denims....may be a good read for some of you....essentially, many are lowerin their prices due to competition (very common) and to hit younger markets (searchin for growth)....they say that the hayday is over and some estimate the era of premium denim will last two more years....

1. heyday, not hay day

2. everything is a fad, but the people who really care about their jeans will still wear em. some people on this forum i bet have had jeans going for at least a decade, and they will continue to wear and wash and fade and starch and whisker and comb long after the interest of the huddled masses is far behind.

3. who are the estimators?

4. sorry if i'm hating on a under 100 posts person, seeing as im kinda noob myself

I'm kinda agreeing with this, most of the mainstream brands prices have gone down, and some have had production outsourced to other countries. But I think there will always be a cult following for good brands and quality denims. The trend of $300 + jeans just cause they're cute is fast drying up though, at least in my opinion. I haven't seen much I'm even interested in that my formerly favorite brands are putting out this season.

I'm guessing shes talking about the über trendy "celebrity" brands rather then the denim thats usually discussed here, and I also think thats what the article might be referring to (based on that short description, any way..)

Like which brands Keri? It seems that a lot of the stuff that the Denim heads are into here is still pretty much just doing what they've always been doing, or do you mean like Sevens and more styled jeans?
yeah the sevens, tr's, etc. as a matter of fact the only one I haven't seen dropping their prices is Diesel, and that's just cause I cant keep track. TR has dropped theirs like crazy, and so has SFAM, and of course Antik has moved their manufacturing to Mexico and dropped proces, and now you find them all the time in stores like Nordstrom Rack and Off 5th

I also see the trend of "Designer Denim" falling off quickly. I know a countless number of girls (most between 18-23) who last year at this time, all they could talk about was which designer denim they were going to be wearing or purchasing. Now it seems they are going for a style that is more funky and less "expensive" looking, with the the brand being far less important. The only thing that I'm not liking is that they are all wearing super dark denim too. It's not raw, but it's "fashion"...

it's been verging on a crash for awhile hasn't it? the premium denim market i mean, with so many players getting in on the scene with celebrity collabs (edun, R&R), and all sorts of supposedly-flattering details that don't really work.

i agree that long after this is done and dusted, there'll still be people crazy enough about their jeans to be exploring the limits of denim, whether vintage, reproductions, or just well-made pieces in general.
