Mac or PC

As i am going away to study graphic design

this fall, i've been thinking about buying a laptop.

Almost every graphic designer uses Mac, but the

price of a Mac is almost double the price of a PC.

So, is it really worth spending the extra money

to but a Mac?

p.s. I dont really have THAT much money to spend.

PC... that way you can easily get "free" copies of Adobe photoshop, illustrator etc etc. Yes I am aware you can get "free" copies of the MAC versions too, but they're harder to come by from past experience.

Yeah, sure, but i was more thinkin quailtywise.

Will the mac last longer?

Because in my experince, I've found that the

PC's usually go belly up in a couple of years,

especially the laptops.

The school should install software on your mac for free, for educational purposes. At the end of the course, technically you have to unistall them, but of course they don't care. Go ask the school first, I almost ended up buying an Adobe package.

what he said. most schools will install the software for you and also will give you a huge discount on other software. i bought only macs for last 10 years and i'm very happy with them. i also work for a company that supports mac so if you have any questions let me know. if you can save up some cash get the macbook pro, upgrade ram and you'll have a great computer for next 5 years.

Its tricky one. Macs are more powerful in the graphics field. I'm heading into that area, but i don't have any money to support a computer change at the moment. If i did i would look for a macbook or a desktop mac. Maybe go on a graphics forum and ask there?

how soon do you need it? the new macbooks are hot as fuck and you can't really use them on your lap. this problem should be fixed by the paris expo in september so if you could wait you might not only get new OS but also a cooler laptop. i don't recommend buying the first gen of any mac models (i do it anyway just for work) just because of small technical problems. also apple has pretty good financing if you want to use it.

i think if you can go with the desktop the imac is a much better choice than the macbook. i think imac is the best desktop on the market right now. you can also use it as a tv.

I got an imac and a wide-format epson printer as soon as I got into Graphic Design at my school but others aren't as lucky. More than half the students I know have a macbook (wasn't it called an ibook before??) and are happy with it. If you're getting into Graphic Design, every student your first semester will be talking about bootleg adobe CS and 1 out of every 15 will probably have a copy. Mac's are industry standard for a reason, plus it's less prone to viruses right?

I saw that the screensize on the cheaper macbook is like 12"... isnt that

awfully small when you're gonna work with photoshop and such?

It's 13 inches, and judging by the resolution, that isn't too small for a good majority of work (this is coming from someone doing a lot of photoretouching and so on, YMMV). Use some photoshop kung-fu keyboard skills and you'll only need 1-2 pallettes, max.
