never saw any, but i did se a bum sitting in a cardboard box chatting on his $300 cellphone.

cell phones are actually super cheap in japan, however the plans are expensive. some phones you can get for 1 yen which is less than one cent. this means you can get a phone for free. so, the bum was probably using one of these cheap phones.

in the united states its the other way around.

Can still find tons of flashy ones in Shinjuku.......

not every flashy guy in a suit is a chinpira yakuza (low-end thug), especially, in shinjuku.

i am guessing that most of the guys you saw in shinjuku were "hosts" not chinpira. they abound in shinjuku, cuz they work and play there.

most foreigners mistake hosts for chinpira because hosts wear the same kind of flashy/gaudy styles. also, foreigners are unable to see the differences in style, mannerisms, and language.

england seems to be anti-evil and yakuza is pretty evil in japan. i know they are portrayed as honorable in the movies, but in real life, they are really not very cool.

damn it sucks to learn that, I idolize Takeshi Kitano films and I got the impression Yakuza are cool as fuck with their Yohji Yamamoto suits and dry, offbeat humor...i also thought they were among the most loyal mobsters in the world. I actually try to emulate the Yakuza "feel" with my personal style, esp. when I'm wearing a suit. Well, at least what I perceived the Yakuza to be.

^^^ hell, it's not hard to not want to emulate yakuza aesthetic. it's like the italian mob, they might seem cool in the movies, but when you meet them in real life, many are just a bunch of crude thugs. same with certain yakuza. it's not wrong to rock an idealized aesthetic. hell, fashion does it all the time. look at military wear.

ninja is another example. wannabee ninjas are probably the most uncool people to walk the earth. fictional movie ninjas are very cool. see?

my wife saw someone get sliced up with a samurai sword in the middle of the street by yakuza. many ambulances, police, and news crews were there but, interestingly, there was nothing about it in the news that day.

my wife also saw a bunch of yakuza beat a man to death in the middle of the day on a busy street. no guns, no knives. again, no news or arrests.

my good friend got grabbed and thrown into a car by yakuza before. they burned him with cigarettes on his hands, he still has the scars. a little bit later they realized that they kidnapped the wrong dude. they apologized and threw him back on the street.

a couple other good friends got beat up by yakuza for breaking a parking lot gate.

so, yeah, they are not really cool people.

I've had a few students from japan in many of my classes over the years. The yakuza would always come up in conversation. Growing up, many of them were pushed around and robbed by yakuza.

true, who knows. these days, there is a new type of yakuza, called, "intelli-yakuza," short for "intelligent yakuza". they speak, dress and act more classy. some are from wealthy families and have gone to good schools. they operate using clever financial practices instead of using force.
