looking for cool design portfolio case

Hi everyone. I only trust you people for advice on this. Im a menswear designer who needs a smart modern portfolio. Not feeling: black binders, (imitation) leather, overly tricked up "luxury" portfolios, the box trend. Looking for design as spare and user friendly as an Ipod, preferably in a "techno" material. Anyone got any leads on this? Much appreciated

search on newstoday.com ... there are frequent threads about this. there is one company that makes a book system that has a metal spine and either glass or wood covers. they're a little pricey, but very attractive and customizable.

first of all, thanks:

miproject- the site alone is cool as hell. and a glass portfolio would be so sick.

high-contrast i do like the jack spade case and love the detachable handles.. but i'm kind of anti the jack spade logo. why? a- bcos its my portfolio, not jack spade's. b-the sorts of guys who flaunt the jack spade logo are "hip" banker/hamptons types.[maybe if it were a (n)umber nine case i wouldn't mind :)]..maybe a person can order without the logo

re: size - the hr dept's and recruiters tell me it's all about small these days for easy viewing. but no design director has a problem looking at big work as long as it's good. it kind of sucks as a designer to have to present at all to recruiters/hr people- they're not visual people, they're about formula.

thanks again

i had one with 11x14 pages for awhile, but it was really hard to get my stuff to function in that thing with it all being different sizes and formats. that size would probably work well for photography though.

the one i have now has 12x18" blackboard pages. way better with the posters and that.

do you have the link to that site with the glass/wood books? i don't have it bookmarked.

when i ever i go on inter views, i just show everything on my power book, it looks very professional, and seems like you know what you are doing....so think about picking one up,

worst idea ever!

75 percent of the time any place requiring a portfolio will require you to do a drop-off, are you gonna drop-off your powerbook?

who the fuck are you telling me thats the worst idea ever. it work well for me.

i dont know what kind of field you are in respectively, but one i never drop of my portfolio just for review unless its art school admission , two, if i have to show some work, for me its alwasy email or a link to a site or even drop off a disk with my work on it, three, watch how you use your words.

if you are ok with dropping off your work at some job, and let them have chance to do what ever they feel like, you might as well work for free.

yes! 12x18" is the perfect size. however i keep trying to do 8 1/2x11 format, and create "micro" mood boards with tiny swatches, sketches etc. its a lot of work, almost impossible-

but i use adobe indesign to create layouts but be warned: ADOBE ON INTEL MACS SUCKS (worth another thread) and i look to japanese mens style mags like Huge, smart, joker ,popeye etc for general layout direction. somehow they can pack an entire season's trend inside a 2-page spread with flats, text, figures, everything. therefore i should be able to do it too,

(this season i love the japanese designers YAB YUM mens and womens collection--check out their fall 06-07 show at japanesestreets.com).

basically i find those magazines to be the only reliable trend forcasts that exist - they are always spot-on and sometimes as much as a year ahead of the west ..in one issue there are enough ideas to fill ten portfolios. i dont copy directly but i always have a stack of issues on my desk for details, poses etc.

For perfect menswear styling and attitude Tune Magazine is the best and each issue is a collectible i don't tear from my Tunes

I digress..sorry. I am just so blown fucking away by Japanese menswear at every level (like most of us on this site).

-mlproject:havent found the glass/wood book yet. will post link when i do.

-6MT: you can say no to dropping off your book- why should you bust your ass just to give it all away to some company to photocopy overnight? Most of my friends refuse when asked. In the end it only makes them look smarter in the end. Has anyone done their book in PDF format? Nobody in the industry seems to be feeling a digital book for some reason
