Vintage Levis Fanatic....And Question

Hi all;

I just registered to the board but have been reading it for several months. Some interesting read!

Anyhow, first things first - I am addicted to vintage Levi's - You name it I got it(I have over 100+ pairs - Ebay mostly) as well as a couple lee, bigstone(dont know much about them but awsome vintage denim) and denime repro. Several Big E origional and repro, and single stitch, double stitch RLs,Mostly 501s with vintage zips in the mix as well. Been collecting for several years and have learned along the way.

There is one thing that I cant figure out and am wondering if any of the experts here can help me. I have a pair of Double stitch redlines that do NOT have the black bartack on the back pockets. They are legit(at least by my eye). I am thinking I may have one of the last run of RL levis. The Bar tack went with the RL on the 501 didnt it?

I noticed you have one pair of old Lee's...are you sure you want to leave him alone with the rest of those badass Levis?...he might get hurt......ive got an idea, give them to me...ill take good care of them :)

but seriously..that has to be the second biggest collection ive seen..and most of it looks totally wearable (apart from the stack of nut hugger shorts of course) ;) ...well done!

You got any with hidden rivets or buckleback? I would love to see them.

I am a collector what can I say!

as for the shorts - a lot of them are NOT wearable but some that are a decent length are - most of them were bought in groups of several pairs to get a 'good' pair on Ebay.

I have a pair of repro(I think) with hidden rivets and a couple pairs cutoff and I have a couple buckleback repro, no real ones yet - too pricey. Not much chance of finding any around here. Most Levis in Canada were made in canada :(

Holy SHIT! That is quite a collection! I agree that SS RL are awesome and quite a step above DS.

About your question, they might be "lot 53" Levis, which is the precursor to the premium line.

I have a pair of black bartack 501 with an old type waist tag with what looks like lot 0117 denim that are not selvage, which is probably not as strange.

Carpe Denim! (not the jean brand silly!)

The jeans I am talking about are not pictured. They are 501-0117 DS RL old patch and no bar tacks. I have a pair or 2 like you described - 501 with bar tacks and no redline, but the give away on those is that they have a double felled inseam. Everything on the jeans in question checks out(old patch, RL, Single stitch inseam, DS pockets - only thing I can t remember is the number on the button 558 I think, or 524) but no bar tacks - go figure.

Hey heres another question for the experts - the numbers on the back buttons - I know it has been asked here before but it was in relation to repro 555 etc. Anyone know anything about the numbering system on vintage? My rough calculations are as follows

2 or 4 or 8 is older than 6 which is older than 524 which is older than 5**

Can anyone shed any light on this?

As for the jeans you refered to - they are DUDE R, and whats your ebay name? I may have bought them from you -They are awsome and would like to get more, but japanese stuff is hard to come by in my size. Would also like to get a pair or 2 of flathead, after seeing the sic fading patterns on them.

P.S I have a pair of 505s with the single redline same as in your picture - are they 505s or some other brand?

Ha! Ithought those looked familiar! My ebay id is Rebel_Denim.

As far as numbers go, I think you are right. On earlier jeans (501XX) I have seen a W. I think 2, 4, 8, 6, started in the 60's. I have seen numbers on 507 XX jeackets too. Japan repros have a J22 and I have had a repro 507XX with the number 822 I think.

Also, I checked your ebay page and was admiring your pic of 3 pairs on your me page - those 66s are tha shiznit - 66 SS 501s definately my favs E or e. I guess thats the ones you used for the background for the book auctions? What are those 2 jeans you used? specs? esp the ones on the right

Yeah, the 66 big E 501s are awesome. In the background for the book there is that pair and some big E orange tab 646 that are totally awesome. I got the Dude Ranch jeans off ebay and know nothing about them, other than they are killer jeans.

There is no info available on the web re: Dude Ranch. It is an awsome denim - were those jeans already faded like that when you got them ? I cant imagine them being raw.

I am kind of new to the japan scene, although some of the fades are killer. Would like to get a pair of Flatheads after looking at the fades and lines they get on a previous thread. Know how ? I dont speak Japanese :(

Btw,in your signature pic, what are the half redline jeans on the right?

Post some pics! Id say they are post redline 83+,

Mid Eighties perhaps. # on top button?

Any inside tag info - I find that newer post redline

Levis you can almost figure out when they were made.

Man I would like to be able to translate those tags - they are like serial numbers@@
