Sheen on raw denim...?

Sheen/Shine is something I really like on raw denim. I remmeber somebody mentioning this was due to the way the denim was compressed through the rollers... but I have a question, when people refer to resin on denim what exactly is it?

-is it a treatment done to the denim to give it that shine

-if so, do the jeans maintain sheen even through washes

-and does non-resin sheen tends to go away with washes

thanks a lot

it will probably slow the fading/flaking of the indigo, but it won't maintain its 'sheen' through washes.

do a search for the levis a-types -- i believe there's a thread discussing a) that they're resin coated and B) that they're not breaking in very quickly.

Resin is used for several purposes including:

anti-crocking

3D - whiskers & various crinkle effects

colour & shine - it has an effect on industrial washing

It can be applied by spraying or dipping the garment or by applying it to the fabric before cutting as part of the finishing process.

The shine on dry denim is different - it's from calandering, and when the seat of your jeans go shiney, it's the same effect of compression+moisture.

ringring,

how does 45 rpm and chimala get that wrinkled effect on their jeans? is it possible to get that effect from "regular" jeans?

Jeans that have a very dry handfeel and have a crinkle that is semi-permanent (ie you can see they have been hanging in a store for weeks and all the crinkles are still there) - they have been resin'd. Dipped or sprayed in resin, scrunched up, and given a nice short bake in an oven.

I'd think what is being referred to as resin might actually be nothing other than starch for some jeans. For example, Wrangler says on its Web site that the raw denim on the 13mzw (which is not shrink to fit ) has starch, and doesn't say anything about resin. Interestingly, it says that you must wash the raw denim jeans in hot water the first three times in order to avoid leaving white starch spots that will not come out with subsequent washing. Has anyone had this happen to them on any raw denim?

I looked on the Levi Strauss website and couldn't find anything about starch or resin in the stf or raw denim jeans. But I wonder if what ever it is that makes them stiff is just starch. This may not apply to more exotic denim finishes.

raw denim has starch in it. this is used to make sewing and cutting easier in the manufacturing stage. these jeans are not washed and unless sanforized they will shrink and twist. the jeans that are discussed above with resin are pre-washed and treated with resin to give the fabric stiffness and sheen. this is done to simulate the raw look and feel, but since they are pre washed you wont have to worry about the shrinkage, and you can buy the size that fits you when you try them on.

both will lose stiffness and sheen when washed, altho the resin treatment will last longer than the starch.
