For example i'm wearing 8d in whites packers and 8d in RedWing GT,

do vibergs run the same size or should i take 7.5D?

you should be fine. I wear 9.5D in wesco and 9.5D in viberg. However, i feel theres more room in the wesco's. Don't you live near viberg? why won't you just stop by and ask them for a custom fit form or measure your feet.

If it's your first pair, then you might want to purchase a 9" for the more traditional engineer boot. I think a taller boot falls kind of nice over time, with the creases around the ankle. Here are some pics for reference.

In regards to a smaller leg opening, I think a lot vintage pairs have a smaller leg opening. I have no idea why this is, but my vintage pairs are a struggle to get into. I like the look of the narrow shaft, however.

I would agree with Coleslaw, go with the 9". The taller boots are quite nice too, but it depends what you want (I have 2 modern pairs at 10-11" heights, so I'm going shorter).

As Coleslaw said again, it's because the vintage boots all have much smaller shaft openings. I have never found it to be a problem, but if you have large calves it may be hard to get on/off. The diameter of most of my vintage pairs measure close to 5", as do my Wescos.
