^ woah, i must be blind haha.

currently reading Candide by Voltaire for my high school literature class...really enjoying it lol

Don Quixote is an equally enjoyable book! It's huge too. Very much in the vein. I love Candide. I used to have a rabbit I named Pangloss. I gave the little bastard uncaged free-run and he proved to be an outlandishly awesome blend of catxdog (well, after the frustrating 2-year litter training, that is). Indeed the best of all possible worlds.

Reading this atm. Damned expensive book. I haven't spent this much for a book since I read Spectacles of Death in Ancient Rome.

I understand that most of this thread is dedicated to fiction but unfortunately my focus of study requires me to spend a lot of time reading academic journals. Anyways, I have been doing some preliminary reading, nothing to in depth, about commodification (in general and specifically to do with experiences, the body, and nature), human rights (the distinctions between 'capitalist' and 'socialist' rights) and the relationship between property rights and the state.

I am really intrigued with the commodification literature but I need to tie it into my political sociology class hence property rights and the state.

I'd be into that sorta stuff but I'm not really into academic journals because they tend to be dry by necessity. If you come across anything that's a little more stylized(?) or just plain entertaining while still theoretical, I'd happily read it and discuss it read. Just throw it up in here and someone will likely get back to you.

Has anyone read any of the serialization in Paris Review? I can't remember the last time I was this excited for a novel. I think this could be right up there with The Savage Detectives and 2666, and it's a much shorter read for those who are time poor.

I had no idea about this at all. Cheers for the heads-up!

I used to have a subscription but let's be honest, the Paris Review is pretty bogus. You don't have a copy of this yet, do you? And that's a good looking edition.

Lot's of good stuff coming out in the next few months. This, The Flame Alphabet by Ben Marcus, Leve's Autoportrait.

Got a chance to see Noam Chomsky speak in receipt of the Sydney Peace Prize. One of my most admired thinkers. What a great man. The depth of his knowledge of history is truly astounding.

I was so inspired I went home and re-read this, the first Chomsy I ever read. EVERYONE should read this book. It's too short to forego.

on that note..

not books but I am sure you guys can appreciate. I have great respect for both Foucault and Chomsky and I think it is incredible to watch them debate in their own languages while still fully communicating to one another.

Richard Dawkins books make baby Jesus cry.

There is very little anti-religion discussion in this book though (and most of his work excluding The God Delusion - strange). Sometimes his approach is heavy handed but he has the weight of evidence and science on his side.

somehow I stumbled upon that Consider the Lobster essay. I was bored in class and read it. I was really amazed how Wallace was able to report on a Lobster Party for a food magazine and infuse philosophy in such a creative way.

obviously nothing wants to be boiled!
