so what exactly is gsm?

how heavy is a 350 gsm sweatshirt? about how heavy are regular hanes/fruit of the loom type sweatshirts?

I belive it is quite heavy, Fruit's hoods and sweats are around 280. No idea about hanes. Gildan has some 340 gsm's. They are pretty heavy.

Without getting too heavy on the math here there are 454 grams in a pound.....16 ounces in a pound. Many companys list their sweatshirts as 9OZ, or 11OZ. This refers to fabric ounces per square yard. You can do the conversion, keeping in mind that a square meter is bigger than a square yard, but a 350GSM sweatshirt would be roughly an 11/12 OZ sweatshirt. If you find a brand you are familiar with, and look at the tech details, you'll come up with a decent comparision.
