ess.lab is a melbourne-based label run by a lovely emigre couple from japan.

in every piece i've handled, i get the sense that there's a great deal of effort made to highlight the inherent materiality of the fabric so as to effectuate the possibility of an intimate relationship between the wearer and the article of clothing. there's also an intention to evoke, through the pieces, a romantic and surreal imagery that is as much of a bygone era as it is futural and fantastical.

the label mainly produces women's wear but also makes a very small portion of unisex clothing as well. this shirt-jacket is one such example of the latter. it's definitely one of the more unique pieces the label has made. it can be worn a number of different ways simply by playing around with the multi-layered collar and cuffs. the layers can be folded, scrunched, ruffled or simply straightened. the shirt-jacket looks pretty cool layered with a waistcoat (**hint**hint**) over it, or worn open with a t-shirt layered underneath.

size 3 corresponds to around 44 / 46.
