going on a donut tour when i hit nyc again (soon)

on my list (besides pies n thighs, peter pan, etc which are already on it):

Fuck yes to everyone that mentioned SK's in LA..French Cruller's freshly made have been a staple since high school

yeah i need to get the fresh cruller

i had a cold one... it was kinda gross

A run-down of my donut tour in NYC:

pies n thighs old fashioned cinnamon sugar donut

this donut gets a lot of things right: crispiness, perfect cake density inside, and a generous amount of sugar on the outside. the other donuts at pies n thighs weren't as tasty as this one...

this was just a typical raised one with chocolate glaze

pretty good, but not that crazy

obligatory stop at donut plant again..

decent donuts, i guess. tres leches did not meet expectations though : (

locanda verde donut

this was extremely fluffy

wayyyy too fluffy

maybe if you're into eating puffs of sugar, i guess

the inside had the consistency of cotton candy

the sugar on the outside was the perfect amount though

shopsins donuts

these were fried to order and came hot and piping to our table

really fuckin good. a full order gets you a plate of donuts and it comes with a whipping cream sauce. they are lightly dusted with sugar. highly recommended!

pies n thighs raised n glazed

really nice consistency. right in the middle between "too dense" and "light", just right. only complaint is the glaze is a tad too sweet

beignets at the little owl saved my life

wow...

they are served with this super tasty raspberry and nutella sauce

really fuckin good... nice weight and covered with sugar

it was so good, we ordered 2 plates of these!

slept on the brindle room donut though : (

(only served on sundays? wtf)

need to go back....

Luhd that pies and thighs. Damn.

Brindle has a makeshift coffee/donut shop that runs in the mornings during the week. Maybe they put the kibosh on it? I dunno, mashed potato donuts sound a bit over the top. Their flavors are kinda out there too, and I'm a firm belieber that simplicity and restriction are the most difficult thing to execute properly when it comes to real American cooking.

I agree that Doughnut Plant is plenty overrated. Shopsins looks a lil greasy but I'll have to try it out. My buddy lives across the street and I've been meaning to swing by since the new digs went up.

the recipe called for a stand mixer but we didn't have that hahaha

cutting the dough... no donut mold/cutter so we improvised with a wine glass and a small bottle cap for the "holes"

they had to be refrigerated overnight and had nonstick spray on them
