Upgrading wardrobe on a budget

lol, its like he bought the cheapest items he could afford to fit in with the sufu crowd

I'm not trying to fit in with "teh sufu crowd" in the physical sense, if there even is one where I live which, let me take a look around, nope no sufu crowds.

If perhaps you mean in the internets sense, I'm humbly admit that I'm not knowledgeable enough to fit in by any means. And god knows I am leagues away from being able to post in waywt, especially with my cheap clothes that I only bought so I could pander to cool people like fadingblue.

You're right that I can't afford a lot of shit though. Which is why I'd like a more experienced opinion to push me in the direction of what I should get to make the most of my $. thx

Guess not having $ is a problem.

Re:

gfunkdocta, I'd like to sort of ball...but am poor.

Re: sonagi

I've got the parka-end covered, but yea I'm looking for a good, fitted, peacoat/duffel (I saw an apc one I liked in particular). Going to Boston tomorrow, maybe one of the boutiques on newbury st. will have some options as well.

As for boots, any particular recs?

snap

i dont have a lot of nice stuff either. usually shop at buffalo exchange or goodwill for basic tshirts and stuff. i mean, why in the world would i want to spend 300 bucks on a dior t shirt when i can get a t shirt for just 10 bucks? also i buy tshirts from concerts, those are cheap and more meaningful than designer tshit.

you just need to save money on a really good high quality winter jacket and a pair of boots. i mean, college is like a peasant town. once you get something that looks awesome outside, youre good to go.

but of course, once you start a good job, thats when you start ballin'.

if three bills is all you can afford, why bother? make sure whatever you're wearing is clean, not obnoxious and fits reasonably well, try to stay in shape (nothing ruins yr fit like a case of lardass) and spend that cash on alcohol, drugs and college girls.

Fortunately, I can get most alcohol for free (I do have to shell out for better stuff like patron) around these parts. weed pretty expensive but I don't smoke that much. Don't pay for girls. :))

I get what you're after though. That's basically what I do. Perhaps it was a mistake to ask for style advise at this stage.

Look, I understand you being on a budget, invest in denim or shoes because frankly the HQ stuff will last you a lifetime. Depending on what types of boots you want - you can spend anywhere from $150-$5000 but honestly don't buy things because they fit your budget. You get a lot of shitty stuff acquired that way, trust me. Save yo cash and drop on what you really want - its def worth it. There's some sick Dior boots when you've got $600 in the Supermarket...

Your cash can go really far buying stuff here because people sell practically brand new shit for hundreds off because they straight up have the deep pockets for it and aren't interested in a certain style anymore.

If you really want to spend $300 now, buy some Dior MIJ 19cm Raw's. You and I both know if you're in college you're wearing denim practically everyday and you can match it with anything. Invest in leather shoes and denim. They'll both get better with age. You'll be thankful 10 yrs from now when you can still wear them and not look out of style.

Will do. I almost pulled the trigger on some dior black 21cm raws. Besides the hem, is there any difference in the two models? Seems like from dior threads that the 19cm is thinner but that could just be my misconception.

You're coming off as trying way too hard to fit in, shit here is not meant to be played with a couple of bills. With only $300 I'd recommend investing in one crucial but important and timeless item rather than a handful of trendy mediocre ones that will likely do little to help you out. One well-selected pair of shoes, piece of denim or a nice fall jacket will make all the difference.

Take that $300 and invest a few days into researching exactly what it is that you want.

Good thread and good posts. There's some forward advice in here right along side some tongue in cheek detractors and maybe some straight up 'can't be done' anti's.

I'm in a similar position as the OP, except it isn't so much that I don't have the money, it is that I do not yet allow myself to use more money towards dressing well cause I still don't feel I have a good handle on what I'd be buying. I've worn garbage for years, but now that I have a disposable income doesn't mean I want to dispose of it.

It takes time to understand what is fit, what is fit on you, and what do you want your fit to be. I don't swallow anyone's waywt, but they all modify my perceptions and I do try to buy on the cheap to experiment with what I see. I've had some successes and some failures, but I can throw real money into lasting items for my successes and allow my bottom barrel scavengings and thrifted scats to filter themselves back to Goodwill and not feel too guilty for it.

Unless you love flushing your money down the toilet, no 'baller' anywhere got that way without toying around on the cheap for a while. It's harder, more exciting, and more hobby-ish to do it thrifted anyway. Besides, the resurgence of interest in vintage work wear, hunting gear, has you in those stores anyway Reading a site like Archival Clothing is getting me hot over something I never *ever* thought about a year ago and I just landed on there yesterday.

There is so much shit out there and it is all so different. As great as the 19cm Dior's may be, there's one dude out there calling the cut stale by now. And as much as I was awestruck by how perfect I think jmatsu's Diwon's are, there's a couple nagging on the toe box elsewhere. So I know there are some laughers at my peasant waywt's, but it's all a WIP and it's fun as hell.

Doing it on the cheap is a solid hobby in it's own right. You just have to stare real hard at the expensive stuff to figure where you want to go with it.

Apology for length.

After stumbling across SuFu last year I've done quite a bit of reading / browsing waywt which have dramatically altered my wardrobe choices and perceptions on brand quality, fit, denim etc.

But now I'm kind of stuck as to what my next move should be--kind of in a transitionary period where I'm gradually adding good-fitting things and phasing out boxy and shitty brands. So I'd like to get an opinion on what a good next purchase should be.

I'm limited to ~$300 at the moment and am a college student so keep that in mind with your suggestions.

Here's whats in my closet atm:

Tops:

--6-7 AA solid/stripe crew tees

--2 AA solid henleys

--MJK shawl-neck l/s

--MJK assymmetrical hoodie

--AA solid/speckeled hoodies

--Salmon W+H hoodie

--M65

--A|X detailed white button up

--Solid white button up

Bottoms:

--Flat Head S5003

--Academi grey selvage

--Dior Homme mij 19cm raw indigos

--W+H raw black coated jenz

Shoes:

--Vans Authentics

--Codes Combine black hi-top chucks

--Clarks Wallabes
