bottom line is that online poker "helpers" are way too advanced for anyone to be playing without them these days. In addition to giving you your percentage odds, the top of the line software actually keeps server-side records of every hand played at every table of the users. This means that the software actually builds up databases of information on your opponents and analyzes their playing style, based on the data gathered by all the users of the software.

it's pretty crazy shit and more than enough for me to never want to play online poker.

besides, I use a mac, and the software's not compatible. ha.

yup, holdem manager and pokertracker 3 for those interested.

in my experience with online poker, it can be very dangerous, but extremely intense (in a good way) at the same time. im not sure if dangerous is the right word. its just that if you ever deposit $ online and expect to win, you must put 100% of ur energy into that.

i started playing, mainly holdem, as a junior in HS, i was 16. just fucking around with ten dollar tourneys with friends. after that for a while, it eventually grew and we had new people. i was quickly convinced to go to an indian casino, fake id, and play $1/2. was seriously underrolled by like 5x. first time i went i won 1100 and thought i was a poker god, rdy to write a book lol. we went to that same casino about 10 more times over that summer, i came out with a decent roll.

soon after i graduated HS, 17yrs old, i made a deposit of $200 and decided to grind out 1/2 for awhile (lololol). rinse and repeat about 7-8 times. realized i sucked and found 2+2. thats just a poker forum that is everything poker, hand discussion, game theory, BR management, optimazition, anything. that really changed my game. i was on the computer, 2+2 and FT at the time, probably 12 hrs a day (this is the ~dangerous side of it) just learning and studying the game. u can really learn alot from that site. some of the smartest people i have ever talked to have been from there.

by the end of my first college semester, i had a ~15k roll and was dabbling in $2/4 HU (i was a BR puss). i made a 2.2 that semester and didnt live "better" than any of my friends. no super baller shit, if u want to move up fast u shouldnt wd unless necessary, and was just so busy getting hands in. my demeanor(sp?) changed; i was always mellow and shy when i played alot. my parents eventually found out that i had played underage (they found a fukton of db's from PT from `05 and `06) and told me to pay for my own school. so that killed my roll.

looking back on that whole experience, i probably wish i hadnt started. it is extremely demanding mentally and will Destroy a social life. on the other hand, you do learn some pretty deep shit. optimizing ranges (i have played 12/10/2 6-max for 100k hand stretches and 28/20/4 over another 100k stretch), theory, and just a general understanding of problem solving is something that i dont think can be taught at uni.

err i kinda wrote alot, if anyone has q's about poker i would strongly recommend the 2+2 forums. do NOT go to p5's, that site is a joke. dont ask dumb shit on there either, there is so much info already there.

I also wish I had been introduced to the game while I was in high school and had the time required to actually build a roll. It also would have been beneficial to get started before I developed a clothing habit in which a day's outfit could serve as a decent bankroll to grind at low limits.

What do you consider high stakes?

I was thinking something like.

$0.25/$0.50 no limit hold'em nights

and $0.25/$0.50 - $0.50/$1.00 pot limit omaha nights

believe it or not, you are gonna need a decent amount of cash to play and maintain at these levels. I would definitely check out some poker forums such as 2+2 and pocketfives.com and get a general idea for bankroll management

seriously, without proper bankroll management, playing online poker is useless. Staying within your limit until you have enough money to COMFORTABLY play the next level.

For example, to be playing .25/50 comfortably you should have about 1500 in the bank. (30 max buy ins) to make up for variance. Also, never move up stakes just to recoup money lost at lower levels. Its not that easy.

As for me, ive been playing alot of UltimateBet and pokerstars. I HATE the play on pstars but their $16 2-table tourney's are my bread and butter. On UB, i generally play .25/,50 with success. Lately, ive been going to local cardrooms and doing fairly well. Generally, live games are WAAAAY softer than online

now that i think about it, playing lower limits online is useless. Too many donks. Im gonna move up in stakes

LETS TALK SOME FUCKIN POKER WOOP WOOP

Two plus two sucks and pocketfives is a tournament poker site. I've been playing No Limit Cash 3 years and poker has been my only source of income for a long time. To play .25/.50 online you should actually have 40 buy ins, not 30. Especially if it is your job (which it shouldn't be if you are playing .25/.50). However you should expect to MAKE 30 buy ins a month. Ultimate Bet sucks and Pokerstars is just Full Tilt without rakeback.

Saying that playing lower limits online is useless because there are "too many" donks is absolutely ridiculous. Bad players are the ONLY players you make money from and moving up in limits to avoid them is obviously a huge leak in your game that will hammer your winrate into absolutely nothing. Don't blame your inability to beat small stakes online on the fact that there are "too many donks". Instead maybe realize you aren't that good and work on your own game and realize that those very donks you are talking about are the only people that will put money in your pocket playing poker in the long run.

anybody here frequent or work in a casino or gamble big time?

I work at part time as a dealer at an Australian casino for a uni job, it's alright, you see a real mix of players and chat to a lot of people, but I don't think it's a very healthy industry to work in. a lot of players are douchebags as well.

personally I prefer dealing to your average punter, because they actually make conversation and they are happy to win $50 instead of the hardcore gamblers who slam their fists on the table every time they lose, and even if they're on a good streak they aren't happy because they're chasing a massive loss. But as far as BJ goes, I don't know how people go in expecting some Hangover shit, they get trashed and play with absolutely no knowledge of strategy, and then bitch about casino odds. if you don't know anything, don't even open your own box, just go find some old vietnamese/chinese lady and watch her and if she's winning just back her.

anyway that's just my experience, I'm interested to hear if anybody on sufu actually does consider gambling serious business.

Ahaha dude earlier was great.. was playing $3/6 cash game. 3rd hand of the night, had QT offsuit in big blind, guy bets $12 and everybody else folds, I call. Heads up on the flop, QQQ comes out. First to act, I check, he bets $22 (he had a stack of about $450), I reraise to $44, he 3 raises me to $88..

Knew he flopped a full house at this point, but didn't know how much he would call, so I just doubled his bet again.. he reraised yet again and at this point was at $352, so I just put him all in and he called. Dude had pocket 9s :D

I love bad poker players.
