the other tread got me thinking. rather than hijack that post.......................................

what would you say is the difference between biting and homage, and just plain lame.

a lot of what say supreme does, is just straight biting. but its 'cool,' because supreme's 'cool.' then xl does the same sort of thing with anything and its lame in my eyes.

lv and supreme is lame. but many like it. so where do we draw the line, and how do we decide whats appropriate, straight wack, and lame.

Everyone in the fashion game is guilty of biting at one point or another, from the top tier fashion houses to the garage start up streetwear brands..

Biting is part of the culture and if its frowned upon then thats just straight ignorance..

Ohh yeah homage is just a legit way of biting..

Just chillin on supertalk!!!

I am still wondering whether or not supreme gives proceeds from the movements they endorse on their shirts (ie zapatistas, etc). If not that's theft, if so more power to them. On the other hand i have seen a lot of the supreme t-shirts and think they are rather tacky looking, but that is just not my style and hence biased.

i'd say biting is taking an idea from someone else and pretending it's your own, or copying from a contemporary or someone in your own 'genre.'

homage is more appropriating something of substance that gives obvious reference to something else from a time past or from a diff't category than the one you're in: like Supreme's Stadium/1994 gear directly referencing Polo's Stadium/1992 gear is clearly homage, not a bite...it's not like they're pretending they came up w/the stuff. Same w/the Carhartt and Patagonia lifts they've done in the past...

i'd say 'spoofing' is more the stuff of t-shirts, where you take someone else's logo and just slap your name on there instead, or twist up the logo just slightly...everyone's done this to some degree or whatever. A lot of time's it's neither biting nor homage, it's just doing it 'cause you can, or else to communicate some sort of new message that uses a prior logo or image as a delivery mechanism.

...and whether Supreme's sending proceeds to the zapatista's or not is beside the point. The stuff is clearly reverential and it's giving direct visual support and 'publicity' to a relatively a little-known (these days) cause, which Supreme, but putting out the shirts, is both supporting and aligning itself with...

biters just rip something off with the intention of imatating

supreme may not exactly be paying homage, but they aren't biting, what they do is more like an inside joke then anything else, because they nkow exactly what and why they are doing something, and it isn't to imitate. If some people weren't supreme hype monkeys other people wouldn't be calling them biters.

Yo selegna I already rock that same setup when i wear shorts, which is not very often, but nevertheless the huarachis and socks look is a hard sell on the fashion blogs.

Also, screw Supreme and all other companies that steal from other cultures to reap a profit. They should start having prints on their t-shirts of Wall St. investors. Maybe that would suit them better. Supreme is the supreme biter. The same as white kids from suburbia trying to claim gangsta.

i'll admit a couple tributes were cool, like keep it up's vision rip. but i'd rather see original designs that deviate outside the usual eagles + banners or stupid live shot on the back + collegiate logo on the front that makes hardcore merch so unbearably lame. i like that bands like cold world were doing tributes to the stuff they rocked - bape, dipset, spike lee, and mental's be true to your school long sleeves.

ps: cool to see a hardcore kid on supertalk.
