Do you guys wear outdoor gear like Columbia and The North Face?

Recommended Posts

I love Columbia. I want to start adding to my arsenal of their products, ie: fleeces, snow jackets, hats, swimming trunks, shorts, pants, etc.

I plan on picking up the North Face Recon Laptop backpack for school.

I don't mind spending money on clean looking gear that

are well made and functional like Columbia n TNF.

Do you guys like these brands? Are their even better ones you know of?

Price wise, it goes: Columbia, North Face, Arc'teryx.

Quality wise .. it might go in the same order.

But I would stick with TNF, their prices are fair. Arc'teryx may be great and I've heard good things about them, but the price tag hurts. How are Columbia jackets for the winter? I'm looking for a new jacket but don't have a lot to spend.

At the North Face price level, I would suggest Patagonia. Personally I think their quality is better than TNF, especially TNF's recent gear. Arc'teryx is definitely one of the tops though. Check out backcountrystore.com - they have some really good sales on the aforementioned brands from time to time.

I'm not wearing these jackets anywhere near mountains. I just need a good jacket to get through winter & I figured a ski jacket would do the job. However.. I bought a TNF jacket and it barely got me through last winter. It was not as warm as it should have been, even when layered. That's why I'm looking for a new one.

For me , snow jackets are multi-purpose. They are made for use when snowboarding but also for rainy days at school...walking from building to building. I rather stay dry than 'look good.'

That's the reason I'm feeling the direction of outdoor clothing companies and the snowboarding industry. They are creating pieces with good looking color schemes (primary colors, earth tones, two-tone designs) that are functional (goretex, breathable materials, solid construction). These kinds of purchases last a long time.

nothing tops my arcteryx arsenal.

gloves, softshell, and beanie and im straightttt.

although my hopes are to get a hardshell this winter.

my suggestion for you would be to search ebay for a less 'popular' brand ( to weed out the possibility of a counterfeit) such as marmot or patagonia.

you really just want a fleece inside and a goretex (or something similar) shell. it should do the trick. what kind of winters are we talking about?

although im pretty sure columbia DOES use goretex occasionally, there are those brands that have developed their own laminates and use those instead ( marmot , columbia ). its not a bad thing to not have gore tex, its just they have an established name and it usually comes with equal quality.

I hope everyone knows that a while back The North Face was bought out by The Gap. Thats why you can see all the the North Face hoodies and tee's being real unorignal with just logos and shit. The North Face is going down the drain fast, better stock up on all that vintage North Face on Ebay.

Personally, I love searching out old school North Face jackets and backpacks. It's completely different from the new school tee's you'd find out now a days. But besides, everyone yuppie and their 9th grade prepatory son wears North Face. Arytex looks promising, i've personally tried their products in cold and rough conditions and they hold up to the test of strength.

it's so damn confusing trying to buy a jacket online nowadays. i just want something that's waterproof, fairly breathable, comfortable and can put up with the worst of new england winters. that means 0-35 degrees F on most days, some colder, some wetter or more windy, etc.,. what i get is a fucking feature dump every site i go to...gore tex this, membrane that, 2, 3, 5, 1.2 layers, armpit warmers, ass cover, zip here, towed hood there...wtf??? and all this crap doesn't tell me a damn thing about what kind of weather the jacket was designed for. arrrrghhhhhhh!

i know patagonia makes good jackets, but no idea what to buy. anyone here with knowledge with this stuff?

How many people here do you think wear jeans to herd cattle, Belstaff jackets to ride motorbikes or even Dunk SBs to skate?

herpsky i too am the only one i ever see rocking arcteryx.

its probalby because theyre designs are very subtle as opposed to northface which uses color combos that make their jackets more standout-ish (that and the thought that north face is still the quality it once was, which it isnt btw)

to those asking for help with a winter jacket, it'd be great if you listed what price range you are looking for. if you plan on spending as much as some of you guys do on denim then arcteryx is definatly your best bet.

the whole layer thing with gore tex is all about breathability. right now 3 layers is max (at least, i think so) and its usually a standard when it comes to higher end jackets.

as i said before, when you look for a jacket you're looking for the first layer which is the insulation. a good windstopper fleece, or a 300 weight polartec(which i don't recommend because it piles and looks like crap after a year, literally) will do you good. the windstopper fleeces come in two different finishes. the soft shell is your best bet, as its exactly what it sounds like. its a soft shelled jacket with fleece interior. it allows zero wind in so thats your ++ right there. the second finish is the normal fleece finish. unlike polartec it doesnt pile (as much) so its also best to go with that.

the second layer, is the laminate shell. breathability is KEY, as no one tops goretex at all. hyvent is the cheaper alternative (north face). you want a jacket that lets everything out (your body heat) and keeps everything out ( the brutal wind).

this combo is top notch, trust me. last winter i survived the coldest NY days in a windstopper fleece from north face, and a windstopper soft shell jacket from arcteryx. not exactly the combo described but very similar.

i'm not exactly an expert but this stuff to me is very similar to what denim is to you guys and i'd be happy to answer any questions possible

North Face still makes some good stuff. Sometimes overpriced. They are a lifestyle brand to some. Well, they have been for a while. Columbia is basic and inexpensive. Nothing special, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Some other good companies have already been mentioned here. I'm no expert on jackets though. I'm warm in pretty much anything with long sleeves (Hell, I live in Texas. I barely even need a jacket).

i'm a jacket whore too. arcteryx is definitely one of the best outerwear brands you can buy. but from a style and functionality stand point, Burton is coming out with some really dope styles/prints for their 06 jackets.. like houndstooth prints/ pinstripes etc. while using gortex XCR and other highend materials.. as mentioned already, with a windstopper fleece and a burton hardshell, you're ready to hit the streets (or mountains if you ride) without any problems.

I bought a Burton AK hard shell last season (around $475, thought I didn't pay that) - it's sick, but I just saw the new Burton Ronin 2L jacket in a houndstooth print (around $230) in the TWS 2006 buyers guide - I just might have to give in to that one.

Anyway, bring on the cool/cold weather.. I over this thick, stagnant, humid nyc weather.

dig.
