I think I love them both equally. You gotta add Nobuyoshi Araki into the equation though. Then you've got some competition.

araki doesnt belong, because his photography is much, much more layered and complex than kern or richardson. there is almost always a method behind araki's madness.

my vote is for kern. he shoots hotter girls.

I like Araki, but he doesn't fit at all. araki isn't a gonzo photographer, he has never been camp or kitsch (excuse me), that's what defines kern and richardsons niche.

Aside from the fact that everyone loves titties, is there any reason to enjoy the work of Richardson or Kern? I mean Araki is obviously extremely talented and have something to say but these two strike me more as a post-modern joke than anything else.

^^ Kern did a shoot for a swedish magazine, portraying a well dressed man in his 40s and young girl, where he played alot with the borders between fatherly love and... something else. Really provacative, but quite subtle (no titties). Not cheap and just po-mo, but rather good.

This is probably going to upset someone but I wouldnt mind owning a Kern or Richardson book to browse through, the things I see by them in Magazines ( like purple ) look really good.

However I cant think about them. I can admire their work and maybe a photo may give me some inspiration but I dont think about them. Not in the same way a photographer like Andreas Gursky makes me think, or rather Andreas has something to say! In fact id say photo essays are much better, something like permanent food by Cattalan or The Fourth Sex by Bonami and Simons would usually give me much more than anything by Kern or Richardson. Gillian Wearing, Jeff koons all these artists who have done photographic works are all much more interesting ( at least cerebrally! ) But these guys photo nice girls very well and at the end of the day im a naked ape, so I still like their work!

kerns photos are good but i really like terry richardson's fashion work. his personal stuff is pretty much straight porno but his fashion work feels more connected to the subject then say lachappelle or something.
