Juicy Fruit Trick Gums Up Gardens Moles

Insight on the News, March 8, 1999

Thanks to a tip he read in a gardening magazine, John W. "Bud" Clark has eliminated a very pronounced mole problem from his own property as well as the property and parks of Pemberton Township, the southern New Jersey town where Clark serves as a city councilman.

His secret -- Juicy Fruit gum. Clark first rid his own 6-acre parcel of land of the pesky rodents by using the remedy recommended by the magazine: He dropped rolled-up sticks of the gum into the tunnels the moles made that zigzagged his land. It was curtains for the varmints!

Clark then recommended the procedure to the township, according to an Associated Press story, and ditto! -- moles no longer were found in the nine acres of the municipal complex, nor was a trace of them to be seen in the 20-acre recreation area across the street.

How does this remedy work? The Juicy Fruit gums up the animal's digestive system after ingestion and kills it, Richard Obal, an agent with Rutgers University's Cooperative Extension Service, told the news service.

Not surprisingly, a spokesman for the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. of Chicago, Juicy Fruit's manufacturer, said of the newly found use for the gum: "It's not something we feature on our product or in commercials."
