Levi's 1947 Help?

Believe it or not I don't wear Levi's... Gasp! I know, I know...

Anyway, I'm looking to purchase some vintage repro stuff and I wanted to know: Are Levi's 1947 501XX the slimmest fitting of the repro stuff?

I like slimmer fit strait leg jeans so could anyone help me out here?

Also, is a 30 waist true, or so, to size?

Thanks for the help guys..

i love the rigid 1947 jeans, definatly the best lvc jean fit.

try to get get the "555"-first season or the "r"-last season models. ive noticed that the "554" fits a little weird in the ass. i am on the skinny side, and i love the way these fit. not too tight, but fitted in the thighs. knee and leg opening is bigger that the apc new standard, also the rises are higher than apc. i buy the size 30, and am an actual size 30. if youre going to shrink to fit them, buy a 31 and shrink them while wearing them, they will shrink perfect. if youre not going to wash them, by your actual size, they fit true to size when rigid.

yep, they're still 501's. just made by different people.

i don't know of any comprehensive online source for this information. there are some japanese books floating around on ebay on this subject. i think this forum itself is probably the best resource online for denim info.

I really think it depends on each person...I've actually had a better experience with '554'-stamped '47s. The Valencia St. '47s ('555') I've had have worn out in the crotch fairly early on.

I haven't tried the contracted '47s, but I might give them a shot.

I'm a 30, but I get the 32 in waist...although I don't wash them very often, I always do eventually...and they definitely will shrink.

you can tell which type (r, 555, 554) by looking at the inner side of the top button.

I have a pair of 'r' 1947's I wore for about 10 months, nearly every day, washing about 5 times. they feel and look good, but the crotch has holes in it now, and the pocket bags are in shreds. I don't know if the other types of 47s would hold up longer.

the numbers they are referring to are stamped on the back of the top button. My favorite cut is the 66 501. I wonder if they will do a deadstock of it. I have had many 47's and they fit really nicely. LVC jeans have indigo that pales really easily, so make sure you shrink them once and wear them a lot before the next wash or shrink. Don't throw them in a machine and avoid soap.

Serge, I went into Wasteland recently and saw a lot of Levis, some "big E", some that cost up to $150 but I didn't really know what I was looking for. Can you give me some tips? What I should be looking for, what's a sign of quality, etc. ?

edit: and is the Levis flagship in Union Square worth checking?

Be aware of fakes! I have never seen a fake with a correct stamp on the back of the top button:

this is a partial list and all from memory, other people can help complete this:

6, 2, 4, 8: single stitch redline + big E (6 seems to be most common)

554: Double sititch (DS) e redlines and E repros (texas)

555: Valencia street repro

R: Contracted jeans

J22: Japan E

824: E jacket repro

552, 16: DS jeans

Blank: 501XX (late 50's and earlier)

Zippers are good indicators. Gripper Zipper has not been reproed but Talon (not Talon 42) and Scovill have. Canadian made jeans and leathers (not sure about levis) have lightning zippers (my favorite.)

levi store in union square rarely has anything. Their buyer is the biggest moron! They should stack the place with jeans because they never have the right size and they seel out quickly. They usually don't even get the whole collection! If they were smart, they would let an online retailer carry the line, the only one that does is Shogun and they gouge their customers.

I've never had a problem getting something LVC-related from the SF flagship...maybe the key is buying early. In any event, they do seem a bit scatter-brained...don't bother having them put you on a contact list to inform you when new items are in the store...they are helpful when it comes to mail-ordering though.

What about American Rag? Do they have a better selection of Levi? I've heard that they jack their prices up. Is this true?

anyone know who now makes LVC jeans for levi, and where in the US is it done?

SOME OF IT WAS AT TAILOR TOGS IN (NORTH CAROLINA?) BUT I HEARD THEY ARE CLOSING. I THINK SKY BLUE IN SF MAY DO SOME AS WELL.

I bought my 47's from the Levis store at the 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica about a month ago. They're finally starting to carry the LVC line again. Also, you will find them at Fred Segal Melrose. Not in the Ron Herman shop but at the smaller side shop around the back. Thay have a ton of them there. My 47's are wearing beautifully; highly recommended.

Forge01, thanks for the help, that's perfect. I'll cruise Fred Segal and see what's up.

One more question. Will I know by the labels on the jeans that they are 1947 etc..? Like do they specifically advertise in the papers in the back pockets that theyare 1947, or whatever..?

Please excuse my total lack of clue.

Tragic, look on the back cardboard tag that says "THE RIVETS ARE STILL THERE" and Levi's Strauss & Co, etc.

Near the bottom it should say something to the effect of "Copyright 1947 Levi's Strauss & Co, San Francisco, CA"

There are other ways to tell of course, but that's the simplest way.

are they re-releasing them as part of the F/W '05 collection?

Do they come with a little booklet, and if so, what is the theme, etc....?

I can't seem to find any store in the US that has the new stuff....seems like the Europe/Japanese LVC F/W has been out for weeks

Tragic,

If you go to the little shop at Fred Segals, the Levi's section is all the way in the back of the store on the left hand side behind the cash register. They are the only raw denim jeans on the shelf. You will inevitably encounter a sales person there because they tend to congregate there. Just ask for the 47's and they'll hook you up and offer advice on sizing. The older staff are more knowledgable than the younger ones so look for them. There's a pixie-ish blonde named Bonny I think that knows her stuff. She'll sort you out. Hope this helps.

I'm certain the new range has a 47 reissue. Check out levis.com, the range should be on there by now, try the Europe site if you can't find it on the US one.
